Really?
and whats AU?
It was either volunteer or be conscripted (called up) unless you were unfit, too old,too young or in a reserved occupation (important war work)
most people who could not join usually volunteerd for something else part time,
My grandfather was medically unfit so he became a special constable during the war,
My dad was/is deaf so he went to the Ministry of Works(full time)as a labourer and helped to build air raid shelters, costal defences(stop the tanks coming up the beach) Gun emplacements, prisoner of war camps, and some secret stuff during the war,
Some of the things he tells me

Some became air raid wardens, fire watchers amongst other things, this was as well as their normal jobs.
many men and boys joined what was originally the Local Defence force Volunteers (LDV) which soon became the Home Guard (no women)
you have to remember there were no fighting women in WWII it was completley different to now
my dads female cousin got a job in a railway signal box, when I first started working I worked with a woman who was near retirement, she was always dropping things, she was very clumsy,I found out she worked in a munitions(bomb) factory during the war

.
Women may not have fought at the front line, but they flogged their guts out on the home front, year in year out!
My dad was 17 in 1940.
Grumpy.
any more questions give me a nod.
