I always thought EMO was a kind of a cross between Goths and Indie kids.

There are so many different 'groups' now it's difficult to keep up - Indie kids, EMOs, Rockers, Goths, Chavs etc

I suppose Grumps the esiest way to look at it is to remember the mod/rocker craze in the 60s... you were either a mod or a rockr and they didn't like each other. It's all down to kids needing a 'label' or an identity to feel like they fit in with a specific group.
