The NFT ran a series of tearjerkers a number of years ago. Two films I remember blubbing through were 'Splendour in the Grass' with Warren Beatty and Natalie Wood as the beautiful young lovers and 'Misunderstood' starring Anthony Quayle as a repressed English diplomat in Rome grieving for his dead wife and unable to communicate with his heartbroken young son. Neither of which got a mention in the top 100. I don't think anyone who had a heart could survive 'Misunderstood' without at least a box of Kleenex. The heartbroken young boy finds great comfort by sneaking into his dad's office to listen to a tape recording of his dead mother. When he hears someone coming he quickly tries to turn the machine off and indadvertently presses the record button and erases his mothers voice. There follows a scene in an electrical shop where he asks a man if he can put his mother's voice back on the tape.
Has anyone else seen either of these films? It'd be great to see them one Sunday afternoon. Perfect for doing the ironing by!
