West Side story of course! The acting is OTT but the dancing is superb

You might need a few more choices than that, otherwise Ch4 might chuck you off their forum for offences against 100 Greatest lists!

In film it has to be the Fabulous "THE HILLS ARE A LOUD WITH THE SOUND OF MUSIC", although a lot of "shows" are now available on DVD I love Jesus Christ Superstar

Um.. those are my nominations for Greatest Musical. I couldn't decide which one. That wasn't intended to be the entire list from which you select a winner. The idea is you just pitch in with the musical you think is the greatest. Like Red Rhonda suggests Sound Of Music. And it's a great choice. But most of the appeal there is the fact that it is kitsch and corny. The songs are appealing and sing-a-long, but the music and lyrics are not works of art as in West Side Story.

All Rodgers and Hart/Hammerstein, particularly Sound of Music, Oklahoma and The King and I,
Oliver, Fiddler on the Roof, Cabin in the Sky, Stormy Weather, An American in Paris, Singin in the Rain, West Side Story, On the Town, Blues Brothers and I love those cheesy Glenn Miller movies from the 40s, Sun Valley Serenade and Orchestra Wives. I could go on but I won't. Big Grin

GUYS AND DOLLS (the cast are all brilliant
and Brando can sing!)
CAPTAIN INVINCIBLE(Australian comedy with
all singing,all dancing Christopher Lee)
BUGSY MALONE (Brilliant performance from
Jodi Foster equal to the grand-dames
of Hollywoods golden age)
LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (Much funnier and upbeat
than the Corman movie with excellent Jim Henson
singing,man-eating plant)
BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER (since I'm not a big
Buffy fan I can't remember the episode title)
SOUTH PARK:THE MOVIE/TEAM AMERICA
(Sing anything in a cartman voice and it's funny.)
MEET THE FEEBLES: Muppets parody by 'Bad Taste'/
'Lord of The Rings'director.
EVERYONE SAYS I LOVE YOU- Not one of Woody Allens best but still interesting(also
the greek chorus in Mighty Aphrodite)
HAIR (Would have been a good idea to retain the nudity of the original stage version
though)
JESUS CHRIST SPERSTAR (end of life of Brian)- much more fun than Mel Gibsons gore fest
and really turned me on Christianity.)

There really are too many as I love most musicals, some of my favourites are:

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
Calamity Jane
Little Shop of Horrors
Wizard of Oz
Sweet Charity (tho the DVD is terrible)
and virtually any Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly one.
Oh, and South Pacific, and High Society...and many more...so can't choose.

Does Rocky Horror Picture Show count? I do rather love that film Big Grin

If I cant have that though, it has to be Les Miserables-I saw it after watching Ross Noble live, when he said it was "basically lots of marching...French marching"

"Oh go and die in a hole by the side of the road!"
"No!"
"Pretty please"

How about the worst? The worst, for me, has to be Moulin Rouge!

I really liked Romeo+Juliet and Strictly Ballroom but Moulin Rouge was just all post-modern style,no substance and not even any original songs. There is only one Moulin Rouge film for me and thats the old John Huston film
with Jose Ferrer as Tolouse-Lautrec.

I'm not a great fan of musicals but my vote would go to Moulin Rouge. Great arrangements of familiar songs but the film versions of Your Song and Roxanne are better than the originals. Big Grin
