OK, here are some of my tearjerkers in no particular order (I apologise if people have already mentioned some of these, as have not read all the posts):

'City of Angels' - Cried virtually throughout, but especially when Meg Ryan is crying for her patient in the stairwell and is comforted by an invisible Nicolas Cage, when Meg Ryan tells Nicolas Cage she doesn't want to see him anymore, and of course, at the end.

'Empire of the Sun' - I watched this when I was about 8 or 9 and the whole idea of a young boy separated from his parents had real significance to me at that age, so much so that I was soon in tears.

'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' - The final episode of Season Two was absolutely heart-wrenching. You'd have to have been made of stone if you didn't shed a tear when Buffy is forced to kill Angel, her one true love, in order to save the world. He has no idea what's happening, and when a devastated Buffy whispers, 'Close your eyes' Angel could not possibly have imagined that she was about to plunge a sword through his heart. <sniff!>

'Angel' - Never really watched this but the episode that made me cry was 'I will always remember you', when Angel becomes human and is able to rekindle his relationship with a delighted Buffy, but at the end realises that he must become a vampire again. If telling Buffy that they can't be together wasn't devasting enough, Angel tells her that she will also have no memory of their brief happiness. But he will. It's so sad!

'Friends' - Yes, if Buffy and Angel weren't trivial enough, I'm afraid to say that I did cry quite a bit. No, I'm not talking about when the series ended. Well, I am, in that I'm talking about the final episode of series one. When Rachel finally found out how Ross felt about her whilst he was away on a business trip. Having decided that she felt the same way, Rachel rushed to the airport to meet him on his return, and stood waiting anxiously at the gate - not knowing that Ross was about to get off the plane with a new girlfriend in tow. As the camera freezes on the unsuspecting Rachel's smiling face, and the strains of Madonna's "Take A Bow" die away, I wept tears of disappointment and frustration!

That's all I can think of at the moment! Any thoughts?

I think that the selection to vote on is a load of crap and totally unrealistic. Where's Moulin Rouge which had everything but, ultimately, despair and total heartbreak. It certainly finished me off!!!

I'd also choose 'Empire of the Sun' - the scene where Jim is reunited with his parents and he sinks into his mother's arms, and then we see his eyes slowly close, is just spot on.

And I'd choose 'The King and I', the moment where the King's hand drops on the bed and you know he's gone and the music starts to gets louder and more emotional.

'Untamed Heart' - in the car when Caroline (Marisa Tomei) is trying to wake up Adam (Christian Slater) and then realises he's died on the way home.

(I have a weakness for the 'realising someone is dead' moments. Wink)

"A little grey, but I'm still...."
"Still hot?"
"Still hot, baby."

Hey, look. "Esc-a-pay". Hey, it's spelled just like escape.

(sorry about the double-post, but since we can't edit after X minutes... :\)

Forgot one - 'Care', the scene where Steven Mackintosh's character Davey takes a bag full of pills and a bottle of vodka down to the sea and takes the lot, killing himself, while Radiohead's 'Exit Music' plays in the background. Extremely sad scene.

Btw, wrt the ER option, where you say 'Fans choked as Carter (Noah Wyle) read out a letter from the terminally ill Greene to the emergency room staff' - speaking for myself (an obsessed ER fan since the day the show first hit Ch4), I didn't choke at that scene at all (except when trying not to gag at the horrible 'Carter is stepping into Mark's shoes!' overkill). :\

Some scenes from ER that *have* got me choked up:

~ Too many moments to list here from 'All in the Family' (season 6) when Carter and Lucy had been stabbed, and Lucy died.

~ The scene in 'On the Beach' (season 8) where Mark listens to Over the Rainbow,
~ The scene with the staff at Mark's funeral,
~ The scene in ep 18 of season 10, where Weaver is banging on the Lopez's door, begging to get her son back.

yes, that weaver scene was really sad but short. other non-er moments:
Pay It Forward - when everyone comes with candles - its actually really quite cheesy but its cute.
captain corelli's mandolin (the book NOT the film) when carlo dies

*******************************************

***and then BAM! the ol' fork-in-the-eye***

***my eyes are dull and empty, my heart is cold to touch,
i know you know you hurt me, but you'll never know how much***

*** hector the disgruntled tortoise was actually quite a happy tortoise until he was hit by a bus ***

There was a film a few years ago called 'No Child of Mine' starring Brooke Kinsella (now playing Kelly in Eastenders) as a 12 year old girl called Kerry who suffers a series of abuse by her Mum and her Mum's boyfriend, then her Dad, and even the guy who owns the care home where she is put after being taken away from her abusive parents. It's really upsetting, I must have cried for over an hour after I watched it. There's this scene when Kerry tells her father what her Mum's boyfriend has been doing, and her father storms in and has a fight with the guy before taking the child away to live with him. The viewer anticipates at this stage that Kerry is going to be OK now that her father is there to protect her. But in practically the next scene her father has her standing on the side of the road and is prostituting her! It's shocking, and very distressing. She finally manages to escape all this and runs away to a children's refuge home on the coast, and in the final scene Kerry gradually breaks down in tears in the arms of the lady who owns the refuge. It's so moving. But probably the most upsetting thing of all about this film is that it's based on a true story.

how terrifying that *anyone* might find Woodland Gimp remotely moving...

The selection of nominees IS rather peculiar. And why is there no interrogation of genre or the meanings of sentiment in film/TV? Very odd.

The Sons Room (not nominated) would get my vote anyway.

I agree with the film No Child of Mine - it was horrific, espcially when her father forced her to work as a prostitute for the truck drivers.

My personal favourites are the scene in Dumbo when his mother is in 'prison' and is swinging Dumbo in her trunk, the scene in Meet Me in St Louis when Judy Garland sings 'Have yourself a merry little christmas' to Margaret O'Brien, or the funeral scene in Imitation of Life - absolute chocker that one!

Where is West Side Story? Every time I see it as soon as they break into Somewhere for the first time I'm gone. Also agree Moulin Rouge should be there.

When the Elephant Man lay down to sleep on the pillow, knowing it would kill him.(That sounds nonsensical,if you haven't seen the movie)I found it hard to take. And a true story at that.

My favourite tear jerkers (if favourite is actually the best word to use) would be

* Murder in the First starring Kevin Bacon and Christian Slater which was based on a true story and eventually brought about the closure of Alcatraz. It made me sob my heart out and effected me for days. I honestly don't think I could watch it again. Really horrifying how some humans can treat others.

* Who's Life is it Anyway starring Richard Dreyfuss. Another film based on a true story about a man who was paralysed from the neck down and basically fought with the medical profession until they agreed not to force him to take medication. His argument being was that if he could move he could chose to die if he wanted to. Very moving.

I am surprised that they didn't have 'The Gift'. The main role was played by Amanda Burton - a mother whose own mother had died of breast cancer. She finds out that she herself has breast cancer and decides that the best gift she can give to her 8 year old daughter is to kill herself with an overdose to prevent her daughter seeing her in the final pitiful stages of terminal cancer. It was a terribly heart-wrenching drama but the moment that really opened the flood-barriers was when she says her final goodnight to her daughter and just watches as her daughter leaves the room.
The part when Amanda Burton tells her father of her decision was very poignant too.
