Sorry I know it's boring to argue with a panel view of these things but come on some of the choices and some of the omissions on this critic compiled list were amazing. Did I get it wrong but wasn't the premise of this meant to be about groundbreaking, innovative films you should see before you die? So, let's not go for the obvious choices i.e. the most recent and more well known films. For instance, if you're going to choose a noirish film about decadence and deceit in America, why pick Chinatown? Pick the films that influence it, that it clearly pays homage to i.e. Maltese Falcon and The Big Sleep. And if you want a film about the Hollywood machine, why The Player when you have Sullivan's Travels or Sunset Boulevard as precedents. And my God, no Godfather, Taxi Driver or Mean Streets on your list but you have Scarface. Shame!

The best film about Hollywood was "The Bad and the Beautiful" Kirk Douglas and Lana Turner.

Quite agree - pathetic list. I stopped watching in disgust after a couple of hours. What happened to the wonderful French/Italian/Swedish films made over the last seven decades?

Shall we compile our own? It would be interesting to see what choices we would all make.

Some of the films on the list I agree with like The Shawshank Redemption, but where the heck is The Shining, it is an amazing film. It is far better than the torture porn you see today.
