Or is it.... Discuss. and while I'm on here.... Breaker Morant deserved a much higher placing. Black Hawk Down is utter faeces. 9! It was well ahead of Patton! Unbelievable! I wasn't surprised to see Private Ryan in at number one, but I don't think it deserved it.
Finally.... What about the Big Red 1? And here's a recent forgotten gem - Starship Troopers, although how I can include Starship Troopers in the same post as Patton is a mystery (even to me),
Yeah - some of the films were stretching it a bit. Gladiator's not a war film. OK there's a battle scene in it. Lawrence of Arabia isn't really a war film either. Things like Platoon, Saving private Ryan about actual war. Though I guess there would be a poll of pretty average films without a wide berth
Schindler's List not a war film ? Someone's having a laugh. Perhaps Hitler's Final Solution was during the swinging sixties and we all just missed that simple inaccuracy !
Boys are too used to action, there is such thing as making a war film based on the battles of Good & Evil. That includes the more humane side of war; survivors, POW's, normal people that were just caught up in it.
Really Glad Rambo was at the very bottom, it deserves nothing less!

I'm with you that 'Black Hawk Down' is rubbish and that the great 'Patton' should be higher- 'The Big Red One' scraped in there, at #99, though no one mentioned the new'reconstruction' version. But 'Schindler's List' was set during WWII, reflected the lives of individuals back then, and related to the Final Solution. It should be in there, as should The Pianist, Ashes & Diamonds, Europa Europa, Salo and arguably documentaries like Shoah, The Sorrow and the Pity and Night & Fog.

Bomber1 you talk about how Platoon and Saving Private Ryan are about really wars and how Lawrence of Arabia is not a war film, well yes it is a war film, it is about a true story and it was sent in the First World War.
