Agree with the Wicker Man,polls are not worth anything. Where was Michael Caine,Nick Nolte to name two omissions.

What about Ray Winstone and Tim Roth? What about Gary Sinise and Pete Postlethwaite? How about William H. Macy and Kevin Spacey and Benicio Del Toro?

There were a lot of omissions. I'd say among English actors alone, there were dozens.

The trouble is that many of these actors are underrated, simply due to the fact that they give effective, understated performances. You don't notice that it's the actor, but rather the character.

I thought the pole was surprisingly good,many good actors hard to get everyone into the top 50. Most British actors because they are theatrically trained tend to have great speaking voices and therefore Britain has many great actors but still I much prefer american actors who have alot more realism and heart. They may not be Shakespearian but I find them less cold and more engaging and humerous. The poll was good though, I do wonder which actors were polled. With Johnny Depp coming 2nd it must have been a young batch or it was just many of the actors who worked with him as they must be numerous. I almost got the top ten right, so I was chuffed. I knew Brando would be number one. But I was really delighted to see Depp coming so close to winning, but I am not surprised because since Pirates of the Carribean I have made a point of going back and viewing all of his work and I was surprised at the both the quantity and quality of his work. What has happened is that he is an actors actor, the actors polled know just how good he is and how hard he works and they appreciate it. He hasn't gotton the recognition yet for all his work but it will come someday.

I think you're wrong about Shakespearian training being something that holds British actors back. For one thing, not so many of the actors working today have ever been a part of the RSC or even done much with Shakespeare at all.

Look at Ray Winstone. He's not classically trained. Nor are Bob Hoskins or Michael Caine. These actors have been overlooked, I feel.

If anything, theatrical experience has only taught them to project....with subtlety.

I won't argue that I like Johnny Depp as an actor, but I think that he should have been surrounded by talent, rather than some crap that you feel was pulled out of a hat.

Theres always going to be omissions in polls but
I thought this was a better poll than most because it was picked by actors rather than
Jo Public. I still remember the time Robbie
Williams was voted best singer in one TV
poll - thats what happens when you let the
public decide.

Brando was outstanding in his day, a revolutionary actor who inspired so many of those who came after him, but I do think he went a bit downhill in his later years. I would go for DiNiro as he has consistantly put in fine performances over the years.

I dont think anyone can say one actor is the best of them all. There are SO SO many amazing actors, all for different things and you can name good actors yes, but to rate them is just stupid. The film's they ahev been in can make you biased as well.
