I agree with all that has been said, no Schindlers List is amazing but equally as amazing to me is how Muhammed Ali's lighting of the Olympic Flame in Atlanta '96 wasn't there.
Watching the greatest, most athletic, most charismatic sportmans of the 20th century reduced to the shivering shell of his former greatness as he struggled to light the flame had the tears flowing for me. Incredibly moving.
Also how the Derek Redmond 400 metre run came in a lowly 77 was also a shock, particularly with some of the entries above it.
Just my thoughts. No-one else seems to have mentioned the Ali moment so just thought i would
Nick.
totally agree with you Nick, the Ali moment was very moving and a worthy contender for the list
Didn't think of the Ali moment but yeah that should definitely have been there.
Amazed that there is no Schindlers List or Saving Private Ryan but how could they leave out the Lion King, the bit where Simba speaks in his weak little voice and lifts up his dad's paw and lies under it. God it's sad, I cried as a 7 year old boy and still now as an 18 year old. I'd say it was sadder than Bambi
There's a bit in Lethal Weapon 2 that is really sad when it looks like Riggs has died and a beautiful version of Knockin on Heavens Door plays. The fact that he didn't die though maybe works against it
Oh and if they were going to have a Rocky moment I'd have had where Micky died.
I think another poster mentioned Shadowlands wasn't on the list? It was in fact - not very high up, about 60ish I think, should have been much higher I thought. I went to see it with my partner and we started crying about half an hour in and never stopped, has to be the weepiest film I have ever seen.
Disappointed with Titanic and ET beating Wonderful Life - that should have been No.1 IMO.
Frankie and Johnny (when Frankie tells Johnny how her last boyfriend beat her up with a belt) 6th sense - when the boy tells his mother his secret

Simon Birch
the Cure

I watched the 100 greatest tearjerkers with my fiancee last night, I admit she nodded off in the end.
I myself waited in anticipation for the number 1, way past my bedtime. Anyway I was amazed at how many "tearjerkers" there were that in my opinion didn't warrant it. There were also a few not on the list (In no particular order)-
1.) Schindler's List 2.) Saving Private Ryan - The finale with most of the soldiers dying and that End scene in the graveyard is moves me to tears each time I see it. 3.) Return of the King - How this never made the top 10, let alone the top 100 is beyond me, for the final 20 minutes I cried like a baby in the cinema, along with most of the audience. One of my favourite films ever. 4.) A.I - now that was a cryer if ever I saw one, (well, the last 15 minutes anyway)
However, I'm glad the Shawshank Redemption and Green Mile were up there, but Green Mile should've been number 1. I always cry at the end of that film.
PS. I didn't cry at Titanic, didn't do anything for me, same goes for Bamby.

Watched the 100 greatest tearjerkers last night and was surprised not to see 'Imitation of Life', with Lana Turner and Juanita Moore, which had me in floods of tears. A daughter, passing herself off as white, disowns her mother and asks her never to look for her again. I 'balled my eyes out'again, at the end of the movie, the mother's funeral, with Mahalia Jackson singing in the choir. The daughter turns up to find out that her mother is dead. I've seen this movie many times and it hasn't failed to leave me in tears.!

Don't know about anyone else but 'When the Wind Blows', (one of the spate of nuclear catastrophy films of the early 80's) really stuck in my mind. Also, 'Somewhere Out There' from American Tail.
I must admit I blubbed a bit even during the short excerpt from 'Bambi'. What a classic!

Unbelievable...........myself and my wife tried compiling a list before the program......in OUR cert's we had - Schindlers List, West Side Story, Private Ryan, Message in a Bottle, Mohammed Ali either lighting the Olympic Flame, or special award on the BBC Sports Personality of the Year show (maybe there is an underlying reason why this could not be shown), Sheandoah with James Stewart, The final scene from One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, Thelma and Louise, The final scene from Pretty Woman, The Power of One, Dances with Wolves, Bridges of Maddison County and Pearl Harbour. As for a tear jerking screen moment - what happened to Prices Di's funeral, the crowds spontaneous applause, the narration by her brother and the singing of Candle in the Wind...........Not one of the aforementioned made the TOP 100...........why ? oh why ???????? especially considering some that were included such as Big Brother, Popstars, Gareth Southgate penalty miss etc

C4 could quite easily do another one by the look of this forum.
A few more I feel -
Christmas shoes is a sad teary film. Seeing Matt Busby cry when Man Utd won the league after 26 years was very emotional. Armageddon was a good one too. What about the end of The Green Berets with John Wayne, that little boy after his Peter-san, bless!! Oh, and Platoon was sad in parts too.
I also agree with When the Wind Blows, and that Ali olympic torch moment, that was very sad to see.
I'm a bloke by the way, and I don't mind admitting I do cry sometimes at movies, etc, especially if I'm feeling low or ill.....(thats my excuse anyways)
I thank you

There is one film and it appears that not many people have seen it because if they had it would be up there in the top ten with all the others. The film is "Silent Running" starring Bruce Dern and some small robots in space. I know it dosen't sound much but its sad imagery haunts me still when i think of it.
This should be there!

I've been back looking at other postings and feel like many Channel4 got some of it and the mood wrong and should in quick order repeat the show with some additions One flew over the cukoos nest, silent running and i am sam, not so much moments but emotional events. Or even a new show.

I'd forgotten about 'Silent Running'! Inspired choice. The robots were so adorable and had clearly defined characters despite never uttering a sound. I swear I'm filling up just thinking about it. Great, great movie.

I think Odie and others are on to something there. A differenciation was made in the the show between a Hollywood 'Tearjerker'- a calculated pitch towards well-defined sentimentality; and a genuinely moving, sometimes even inadvertent emotional moment. Perhaps I haven't thought this all the way through, but it seems to me that the less saccarine, the more memorable.

I agree the Ali Olympic moment and Silent Running should have been there.
I might be on my own, but the end of Planes Trains and Automobiles sets me off.

I have also registered to complain. here are a list of tearjerking moments i can't believe they missed out:
1. Steel Magnolias: When Julia Roberts dies, then the funeral, heartbreaking stuff acted magnificently by Sally Field.
2. Doctor Green dying in ER, sooooooo sad.
3. The 1997 version of Romeo and Juliet, much sadder as they show Juliet waking up as Romeo dies which is not done in traditional versions.
4. Maybe this is just me but i always cry at the end of the bodyguard?!
5. Armageddon...good film, bittersweet ending that warrants a good few tears.
6. The end of friends/sex and the city? surely I wasn't the only person who was moved? Its got to beat changing rooms at least!
7. the Lion King, i'm sure I don't need to say which bit.
8. Goose dying in Top Gun (poor Athony Edwards, he doesn't have much luck!)
finally, although I'm not sure as I've only seen it once, but all dogs go to heaven? The first film I ever cried at, but i was only five so maybe its not that sad!
Shocking behaviour channel 4, I demand a re-vote!

Grave of the fireflies. No contest. A brilliant film which u would not want to watch again. Guaranteed 1-2 weeks depression.

I forgot about Silent Running, that was a great film, the thought of being alone in space......
I think C4 should do another show, and listen to what we have had to say.
And put in Return of the King this time, and leave out most of the early black and white films.
I tempted to say that we should now devise our own lists on here, and see what we all come up with??
What do you think?

What about some of the Buffy episodes?
When Buffy is forced to kill Angel
When Buffy's Mum dies
When Buffy dies and gives the speech about 'life' to Dawn
And many more
They should have all been in there I thought

What about OLD YELLER ( I think it was a Disney film about 1960ish) - Story about a boy and his dog - the dog gets rabies and has to be shot. It's the saddest moment ever!
