Why do they bother with remakes, unless they know hand on heart that they can do it better than first time round, I have watched the two Cape Fears which was the exception as both were good, but still prefer the first with Mitchum in the lead. wish sometimes theyd leave really good films alone. can you imagine a new Gone With The Wind, I can , and hope it gets left alone.
Most remakes are just to make money, which is the same for most films I suppose. Some do work, some they remake for a new audience, i.e making a black & white film again and making it in colour, or remaking a Japanese film and making it into an American film.
I agree with MrC those two remakes seem to be the exception but i also liked the remake of the Seven Samurai,BUT then you have the truly awful - Get Carter and Mean Machine some you win some you really do lose badly.
Rarely a film is remade and becomes the one most remembered. A Star is Born was made three times, but it is the remake with Judy Garland and James Mason which people remember.
And the award for the most pointless remake of all time goes to Psycho. Is there anyone who seriously disagrees?
