I have to say 'The Night Of The Hunter',directed by the actor Charles Laughton is a movie classic, partly due also to the acting
talents of Robert Mitchum and a good script by
James Agee but also partly for the dream like,
expressionistic quality of the film that blurs
grim reality and dark fairytale.

But also:

Citizen Kane (Orson Welles)
Ghandi (Richard Attenborough)
One Eyed Jacks (Marlon Brando)
Play Misty For Me/Unforgiven (Clint Eastwood)
Quiz Show/The Milagro Beanfield War (Robert Redford)
Little Man Tate (Jodie Foster)
The Great Dictator/Modern Times (Charlie Chaplin)
Three Men and a Baby/Star Trek IV:The Voyage Home (Leonard Nimoy)

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, by George Clooney. He borrowed a lot from other directors, but it's still a great achievement imo.
