Because hybrids are mainly designed for the USA who don't go much on diesel cars. Some do have diesel-powered hybrids in the pipeline though.

a)So that we can all see a Prius driver coming and take appriopate action, so we don't get held up by someone trying in vain to keep the petrol engine from cutting in.
b)So that Matt Damon and his liberal chums can make everyone think they're doing their bit.

See question 1. The ghastly hatchback is not sold in the USA. The USA is were the big money is made on hybrids.
