Although the vast majority of my cars have been petrol-driven and 2 of my current 3 cars run on it, i cannot for the life of me understand why some people still detest them, even the latest ones which are genuinely fast.
I would love to hear what the staff at C4 motoring think. They drive cars powered by both fuels all the time, after all.

Chance would be a fine thing. Things are a bit crazy in the office at the moment as the site is undergoing a lot of back-end changes - hence the lack of new content earlier in the week. We are now motoring - so to speak - and trying our darndest to catch up.

As for the original question. Yes, modern turbo-diesel have come a long way in recent years. The problem that many have (including some on this forum) is that they remember the time when diesels were slow, noisy and dirty - when in fact nowadays they are usually faster and cleaner than similar size petrol engined vehicles.

Once you go black you never go back, so they say.

Which is why I continue to drive petrol cars.

That's not to say that I'm all for diesels in every car - it's all down to context.

Hot Hatches and diesels really don't get on with me - and yes I have driven the Fabia vRS, Leon etc. As is also the case with city cars - an Aygo or C1 with a diesel is the most dull car ever - however with a petrol it's a perky little thing.

When we get onto big cars, or cars that need to do big mileage, then diesel makes a much stronger case for itself - unless you're someone who has more money than sense.

That is so true, Tom. My BMW M5 does things no diesel can (currently) do, but to write off all diesels is silly.

Tom, what would you say were your favourite diesel cars?

Hmmm... tough one.

I quite like the 1.6 110bhp Peugeot HDi engine - particularly nice in the new 207.

Other than that - 3.0-litre BMW diesel as fitted in many beemers - drove the X3 with it recently and it was very good.

I'm not a fan of the VW/Audi/Skoda/Seat diesels - I still find them too noisy and clattery, especially considering what other companies manage to do with diesel.

Honda's diesel is very good in the Accord - and the Civic, although I'm not a fan of the Civic as a package.

I also have a 55-plate CRV with the 2.2 Honda diesel engine.
It is louder in this car than when in the Accord, but is a fine engine nevertheless.

I agree about the BMW diesels. I was impressed with the new (231bhp) 330d and very impressed with the 535d.

Have you tried the 1.6 TDCi in the Focus?

The estate version would be a serious contender for me as my next car, as it is not too big to fit in the garage!

Would agree with the noise from the VAG engines! The 1.4 3-cylinder is even worse - but I do like their power delivery, my 1.9 has no turbo lag at all!

Agree here, the A4 TDi I drive has a punchy engine but at times can get a bit agricultural. It's worse in town on a summers day with the windows down and you can hear the clatter clatter clatter reverberating round the buildings. It is better than the A2 TDi I had before though...

yep, went for the A2's design and build. I'm a bit of a diesel fan and thought it would have better residuals (which it did). The economy and performance were great, especially on the open roads but it was a bit of a tractor in the way it went about it. I still think it was slightly better than the petrol equivalent at the time (non FSi).
