I had the pleasure of being driven home yesterday. There was a spot of bother with the trains .... apparently caused by high winds .... apparently caused by the amount of hot air being spouted by supposedly sensible individuals who, for some unfathomble reason are expressing surprise that shutting a collection of cretins in a big shed for three weeks will cause them to behave like cretins....anyway, I digress .. I was being driven home along the M1 yesterday in a taxi and came alongside a 56 plate, white, Lamborghini Gallardo. Now I have often found myself dribbling all over my shoes when seeing these parked up or burbling along the streets of the square mile but yesterday was the first time I've ever been around one stretching it legs.......What .......a .......sound. Utterly, utterly glorious. Somehow, they've made the perfect engine; more manly than the squealy Ferrari V8, less like a bar fight in full swing than a TVR. The perfect balance. Belissimo.
I've learned on here that Ken Livingstone is stealing everybodys' money. Well, I'm glad he's been found out and when they make him give it all back, I'm having one of these.

So very many great sounding cars, although it depends to an extent what you like.
Ferrari F430, Ferrari Enzo, Lamborghini Murcielago, Lamborghini Diablo, any small or big block USA V8 over 5 litres with a decent exhaust sytem, the M3 CSL, Renault Clio V6 MK 2, TVR Cerbera 4.5. Just a few i have heard recently which i love the sound of.
The ones i have owned of late which i like the sound of best would include the M3 CSL, Monaro VXR 6.0 (Miltek full exhaust), Focus RS (Graham Goode full exhaust system).
Probably the dragsters we used to watch at Santa Pod many moons ago! Apart from that, most TVR's and the latest Astons But overall favourite is the Mercedes Maclaren SLR which has a soundtrack that vibrates through your whole body as it potters up our high street.

--------------------------------------------- I used to go a lot in the 70s. A chap at work in those days actually built a 'top fuel' in his garage and we went as support crew! I used to love hearing them just ticking over - a sort of burbly, burbly, burbly and then VROOOOM as they blipped the throttle while queuing to line up. You don't ever forget those sounds! I'm glad its still going.

Have you done a 'run what you brung' there? --------------------------------------------- I haven't been since we moved to the South Coast in the 80s. They didn't have a 'run what you brung' when I used to go. As it was a Mini 1000cc it would have been embarassing! I must try to get up there and re-live the memories - (and the smell of the nitro) Do they still set fire to the tyres to warm them up before a run (they also used to pour some chemical on the tyres to melt them)?
My work colleague used to have to re-build his engine after every other run and he imported the tyres from America. He told me that the tyres increased dramatically in diameter during a run, becoming very tall and thin.
I remember that the flywheel was directly between his legs!!!
Seriously, take a look at the Santa Pod website and see the major events. The biggest is the European Finals, other big ones are 'The Summer Nationals' and 'The Canonball'. Fancy one this year?

I'll check on website and dates and get back to you - thanks.
The Top Fuel cars downwards to street class spin the wheels up before they do the run itself. The Top Fuel/Funny Car class car has no water cooling, so can only run for so long before shutting down. Delay on the startline or during burnouts often means a cancelled run.
