Are you implying that diesel is murdering, yet petrol isnt? Or have I taken that comment incorrectly?

I like to think that if Salvador Dali were alive today, he would be contributing to this forum. The threads do take a surrealistic turn sometimes.

Back to the point. Diesel for Marine engines is a non-starter. Thes big fellas use heavy oil, and unless the merchant fleets of the world want to be re-fitted with new engines, forget it. Ship generators ( the little ones that give lights and heating etc) are diesel but the main engines are not.

i have seen in a yachting magazine that red diesel is going to have a big tax increase. that will raise the running cost of boats that do use red diesel if they use diesel engines. i thought small boats used petrol engines but maybe they mean the medium sized ones. the april fool could have been inspired by that story.

Virtually all inland waterways narrow boats/barges use diesel engines - you are right that they are up in arms about the tax element as they do indeed use red diesel at the moment and the Gov want to tax them - the reason its a grey area (!) is that on a narrow boat (especially the live-on variety) the engine is used for heating/electric generation as well as propulsion - the boaters representatives (the IWA) have proposed to the Gov a compromise tax level on fuel - I've not heard anything since...

So people who chose to live on boats want a special deal from the government eh? I chose to live in a house and I don't see anyone offering me discount on my gas and electricity (which has gone up a bleedin' sight more than diesel recently.) Sorry, you want the freedom of living in a mobile boat, you pay the going rate, there are plenty of more deserving "special cases" for cheap fuel.

No they don't, QP and I think you are missing the point, the diesel they use has gone up by the same percentage as other fuels such as gas and electric so their bill have risen just the same as ours in %ge terms... but what the Gov want to do is increase the cost of the diesel they use to the same as it is for car users by taxing it at pump rates, even though only a small %ge is actually used for travelling around - if they did that to domestic gas, electric and heating oil our bills would soar far more than they have so far. What the boat lobby (ones whose home is on the water) have suggested is that they agree a %ge which can be put down to "travelling" and the rest domestic (heat and light) use, taxing each at the appropriate rate.... which is, in effect, what we have as house users. They are not asking for any favours, just a level playing field with the rest of us who already have that set up... They've had it good so far, I agree, but their proposal seems perfectly logical and if the Gov insist on taxing the whole lot at the "commercial" rate we pay for pump diesel how long before they realise they could do that to our domestic bills as well... thin end of the wedge....
|
| |
|

|
PS most boats used as "homes" are moored in one place for most of the year, some permamentlly.... to have a "domestic" licence on the BWB Inland Waterways you have to have a permament mooring as far as I'm aware.

Regular diesel here is at least 10p per litre more than regular unleaded at the moment. I have seen diesel for 123.9 in Farnham, Surrey.
