Well I had three of them for my troubles and if they had sorted the water pump problems out earlier it would have been a match for the mini. Even had an opening rear window. One of mine had a concrete block under the bonnet/boot to help handling. As with a lot of British cars it arrived on the market with too many stupid faults-see also Maxi.MGF Discovery etc etc
Yeah the Imp was rather good. Unfortunately they tested it on the newly opened M1. "Fine" they thought. Until it sat in traffic. An ex-girlfriend of mine's Imp blew the head gasket every 20,000 or so. Luckily she new a local bloke who was mad on them and he repaired it for her at cost. Didn't need power steering - rear engined and RWD - super light front end throught the bends!!!!!! Just mentioned Burns Night to the missus and somehow mentioned Rab C Nesbitt - she got all narky!!! No idea why.....
I live 4 cars me.....

ehhh argylle???? surely you meant argyll? apologies for nit picking but a relative of mine was their head of design way back when they had a factory in alexandria. there is an argyle street in glasgow, perhaps that's where your confused spelling grew from??

Theres an Argyll Road here in Bristol. I thought seeing as you recommend Scottish roads, I would drive down it. I was disappointed to find that it didnt actually go to Argyll. It went 50 yards before becoming Brigstock Road. Ah well....

there was the 'Argyll', a famous (to some) make of car....ALbion trux, weren't they from Scotland?
I still think Volvo's were assembled up there in the 60's..or was it SAABS?
we might even blame Scotland for the 'Big Mac?'

I'm convinced that some of the earlier car ads were filmed in The Highlands....anyone know if this a fact??

There used to be many. Albion is the first that springs to mind. The factory was near Balloch but it's a factory outlet centre now. You can't fight progress I suppose..... :-( Anyway, I'm English and proud but the wife's Scottish :-)

Yep, me too. Just outside Glasgow (G66 for postcode boffins) Albion was in Bathgate was it not? And there is still something remaining of it in SOuth Street in Glasgow too - I'm sure I saw signage the other day. Axles etc is it not????

na my spelling error was due to my haste, not confusion...argyll made cars well into the eighties..dunno if they ever sold any, but weird renault powered mid engine machines if i recall correctly...think the guy making them held the rights for minnow fish carburettors...or summat....

arroll-johnston..argyll and albion..there, it had been bugging me all night.....

..sorry..re the argyll sports car of the eighties, here is something i found on t'internet....
'In 1982, the Duke of Argyll launched a new sports car in the grounds of Inveraray Castle. It was built by Bob Henderson and Argyll Turbo Cars at Lochgilphead, and went into series production six years later, but few were made. Development costs amounted to £250,000. The structure is a combination of box-section chassis and tubular space-frame: by undoing 10 bolts, the entire rear end, suspension, gearbox and Rover V8 engine come away. Its top speed is 130 miles per hour. The new car was named after the original Argyll, in honour of a grandfather of one of the investors who worked in the Argyll factory at Alexandria. The car is designed to last – it has a glass-fibre body made next door to the old Arrol-Johnston factory in Dumfries by Solway Marin'
bugger, got the engine wrong..shoulda guessed it would be the ubiquitous v8...i remember fast lane mag actually driving one in the eighties.....

|

|
Can't rememeber the company's name but in the early 20th century there was a car mkaer based somewhere outside Dumfries, designed and built their own models as far as I know. Glasgow transport musuem has one of their cars somewhere. Vinegar on your chips? Heathens!
