Lets say it this way, Boundary you know a hell of a lot about cars, you have owned heaps of cars and have a vast amount of expierience, only those with a small narrowmind will deny it.

As i remember it, you told me you couldn't afford a car over £2000. and that the AX came closest to anything fast you could afford for the money.

Because I wanted my one, something different, fast and something I could work on myself learn more about the mechanics of cars.

Maroon, cheers, but let me make clear that i know people with much more knowledge than me, about cars.

However, i HAVE spent a blo*dy fortune on the hobby i love, for over 33 years and it would be strange if, after 80-odd cars, plus some racing thrown in, i din't know just a tad more than our resident Noxy.
The reason i am prepared to back up my views, is that i have experienced most cars first hand and i like all types of cars, i write very few off for no reason, as some do.

Noxide has got a very quick car for the money, i am a little impressed by what he has done actually.

But respect starts to wane when he picks on cars he knows nothing about.

there is no diesel anywhere that is better than the equivilent petrol. show me one. what the diesel suporters compare as an equivilent petrol is not correct.

.......
There's got to be a hundred reasons why i should listen to diesel owners, but right now, i can't think of any.

no one is saying diesel is better then petrol. stick to the topic, rather then wave on to another.

I assume you're talking engine capacity (cc) and not cost, fuel economy, speed or performance overall (the things that actually matter). Your inability to use capital letters does not help your case.

Mmmm, and I thought the topic was "how do you drive a diesel?"

Slightly off topic, and as predicted the petrolheads have seen fit to use the thread to sl*g off diesels, sad, but predictable.

Just for once, children, if someone asks a decent question can we have a proper discussion without resorting to "mine is bigger than yours" rubbish.

If you want to do that, then set up a thread called "Petrols are better than diesels" and we'll all have a go on that, and leave this thread for sensible posts. Roll Eyes

maroon you wrote about the petrol vs diesel debate i countered it. so i am mindful as stayin gon topic as you are. the topic is about why diesels are good, if somone states something, like you just did, whcih i believe is wrong, then it helps the topic.

No axe to grind whatsoever, because i am a supporter of petrol and diesel cars.

One of my earliest diesels was a 2.5 Granada. A more horrible and useless engine you would be hard pushed to find. Yes, it got me about, but beyond that i couldn't stand it. The power and torque was finished by about 3,200 rpm and the peak output was pathetic, especially for a car weighing almost 2 tons. It was far more economical than a 2.9 Granada i also owned , but that is where the advantages stopped.

Todays diesels put out something like 99% less emissions, have about 60% more power and about the same in torque. They are also much quieter and refined. Evolution has done it's job very well with oil burners and they have come much further in the last 20 years than petrol cars have, that's for sure.

Something like a 330d, 535d or A6 V8 td has a splendid engine.
As far as how to drive goes, the automatics largely worry about that for you. Manual diesels will see you changing gear earlier than a petrol car, but you soon get used to making the most of mountainous torque from just above idle. It's easy after a while.

Take the 535d. A car i drove to Exeter and back.
272 bhp, 413 lbs-ft, (easily and cheaply modified to 334/506), 40 mpg on a run, superb acceleration in any gear, over 500 miles to a tankful, 100 mph cruising available at a mere 2250 rpm, optional 19" wheels of a width similar to a Porsche 911 turbo of a couple of years ago.
Hardly a boring car. Hardly slow.
With the simple upgrade mentioned, the car will get to 100 mph in 13.4 seconds, 60 in 5.5 and yet have huge grunt from just above idle for real-world road performance.
Boring? You must be kidding.

This is as accurate as anything i have yet seen, as far as a reply to the original question goes.
IMO.

if equivilent versions were put against each other then probably i think the scores would be even for both if all factors were measured. the reason my opinion favours petrol is for performance /speed, and sometimes cost and economy but not as much.
the use of capitals doesn't change the concept of any opinions i discuss. so that doesnt make sence to me your opinion on that.

WTF are you on about, first of all the qoute you used is a qoute i used from something Boundary said. Secondly i didn't start this thread, secondly the question of the tread is HOW DO YOU DRIVE A DIESEL? not IS DIESEL BETTER THAN PETROL?

No it isnt beach, my topic is about how you need to adapt your driving style from petrol when you use a diesel to get best performance / economy as so many people on here when we talk petrol v deisel always say "well you guys that are used to petrol drive them wrong"

Craig, i don't think it is that different, really.
You don't generally need long to discover how a car goes best.
Many diesels rev quite high anyway now, some to 5000 rpm.
The most powerful ones are all automatic, so i don't think it is a problem, the lower powered ones will let you know how they like to be treated, by the way they perform.

One way of looking at it is this. In many petrol cars, if you change early, you won't get very far, very fast, if you use the revs you will.
In a diesel it doesn't matter so much, changing up at half revs will still see you getting along pretty swiftly.

I'd say it depends on the diesel that powers your car - BMW are know for making a more "racey" diesel engine - one that revs higher - and road tests prove that they are not as efficient as the lower revving engines used by, say, VAG. It suits BM's style to have this type of engine, though.

The reason i was so critical of that taxi driver was that he drove the engine just like Noxy would drive his petrol and it was both noisy and uncouth. The engine concerned was the VAG 1.9TDi 130bhp and in that car (the Superb) it can waft you along withn very little noise, but quickly, without using high revs - the thing most small (sub 2.0L) petrol engines can't do. A few months ago we had the same car but a driver who knew how to drive it properly and it was a lovely journey!

I let the emgine do the work - mine will pull like a train from about 1500rpm, so making relaxed progress.

As regards the smaller "perforamce" diesels (such as the VRs and Ibiza), I would only add that whilst you can get a petrol equivalent that is faster you don't use that perforamnce all of the time and when your not revving the n*ts off it the diesel makes a surprisingly economical runabout, more so than the petrol - i.e. you can have your cake and eat it!

b308, i am looking at a Civic Type R today, (197 bhp/139 lbs-ft), but i came very close to seeing a Seat Ibiza tdi, (160 bhp/236 lbs-ft) instead!

139 lbs-ft - surely it has more grunt than that?!

The Ibiza is a fast little car!

I'm afraid I'm stuck with mine for a few years yet, unless I come into some money! Big Grin

Nope, the Honda has naff-all in the way of torque, like the S2000 it is all high-rpm happenings!
But that suits me for what i am looking for in a hot hatch for the summer.
