....make a jolly nice noise, though.

They aren't marketed as a hot hatch as such. The car has high refinement, 4wd and is in a different sector to something like the faster but smaller-engined Astra VXR.
Also, to say the considerably lighter, 340bhp E46 would be thrashed by a 335d - or even the 320bhp E36 M3 Evo - is madness. People talk about these cars like they are world beaters. For goodness sake they are 280 bhp and 1735kg standard! A new shape Saab 95 Aero would keep with that, and a Volvo S60 R would beat it.
I was pulling on a new shape 530d accelerating off a roundabout onto the bypass, despite the fact I had 4 people in the car! Incidentally I beat the S60R 0-100 time at the Pod (15.2) and the new shape 9-5 Aero has another 30bhp on mine.
It's true the R32 isn't that quick, as I found out when one cut me up then couldn't lose me on the bypass

The S60 R has the 15.2 time. PB got a 14.9 at the Pod. and yes Ian any caterham style car will be very fast even the 1.4 will leave most stuff behind to 100

I was referring to 0-100mph of 15.2 for mine. The R32 is 16.0 and S60R in evo magazine is over 17s which seems a bit slow but could be down to conditions. I got 14.9 quarter mile - not bad for bone stock barge
