driving what???....as far as i know, the coupe fiat does quarter mile in 14.6 bog standrd at just over 100mph.....would have thought the old rover would have blitzed that time with all the money and effort he has put in...
I don't know how much drag racing you have done, G, but i've done loads, mainly on bikes and the times in the brochure are often very different to what an owner can reproduce. A high-ish mileage car, 12 years old, driven by the average owner, is never going to match the factory claimed figures. Plus, Oli's car is only about 30 bhp up on standard and also the weather has been bitterly cold. Traction won't have been too great.
My turbo ZZR1400 did just under 10 seconds, with me aboard, at around 150 mph terminal, yet an expert can do that on the stock bike, with over 100 bhp less! Sob!
iv done no drag racing and dont plan too....it means nothing to me, tho i bet the adrenalin rush is huge..would have thought the cold crisp weather would have helped the power, and, if he had warmed his tyres up, his launch shouldnt have been too compromised.....and, again, 30hp is a fair hike, id have expected low to mid 14s from the car to be honest, but again, as you say, its hard to match what the real pros and roadtesters achieve...
I think wheelspin will have been a problem with the Rover. You're right about it being a 'rush', at least it is in, or on, the fast vehicles! I got to 150 in under 10 seconds and it felt very quick, so quite what 0-340 in 5 seconds is like, (Top Fuel cars), i dunno!
It was a good day, quite cold but sunny. Traction was poor at the start but around 2pm they brought out the machine to dry the track. Nox and I had 3 good runs against each other plus 2 more that I completely cocked up the launch by forgetting to turn the traction control off. It was a first for me at Santa Pod. Of the three good runs we had it was virtually a dead heat each time with Nox getting a better launch and me gaining just before the 1/4 mile line with not enough space to get ahead, Nox finished a nose ahead each time. I was running a bone stock Saab 9-5 Aero and my best time of the day was 14.9 with a terminal speed of 96.75mph. Nox's best was about 14.6, I'm sure he'll give all the details soon.
One of the fastest cars of the day was a Mk2 Escort with 1.3L badge and standard L interior running a Cosworth Stage 1 approx 280bhp, getting low 12s!
Heard you had a bit of trouble with the Jag Ian?

I have never achieved a decent time in a car at Santa Pod for some reason yet have done some very quick times on 2 wheels. The best i have done with 4 wheels was 12.8 in my slightly modded Lancer Evo 340.

further proof that these old saabs, even the post gm ones, are bargain rockets....bet nox was chuffed to 'only just' beat a bog stock ikea wagon by a nose....
I camped over on the Saturday night and it was bitterly cold, minus 7 celsius. I can honestly say I have never been so hold in my entire life!
Started off early around 10. I didn't play with the car at all - had my speakers and subwoofer (not that I ever listen to music in the car ) left in, didn't bother warming up the tyres or pressures. Just wanted to run it as it is every day.
First run was against a newish shape Scooby WRX. Traction was awful as the surface was frozen, he got the jump but I was catching again by the terminal (figures prove this). Next run I got lag so that was a wash out.
I had huge problems getting any traction in first gear, several told me it was about the worst of the day for traction! I got some good runs though.
Thrashed a Corsa VXR and a Megane 225.
I raced a Mini Type R and lost by 0.1 of a second, slip says I got the faster terminal speed and was catching!
Several runs against Petrol Blue, I managed to win them all but it was very close. He had better punch through second but I just came back onto full power past terminal, so all in all very close!
My best time in the end, considering the terrible conditions of the track, I am happy with. 14.6 @ 97 mph. On a dry sticky surface I'm sure I could have got a very low 14, as that's what most get with this same setup.
Supposed to be saving for moving but I'm really starting to enjoy this car now, a T28, Pulsar intercooler and custom manifold and turbo elbow/downpipe will see me in the high to mid 13's on a good surface and about 260bhp.
I was running faster than anything with the same power, apart an Integra Type R with decat, stainless exhaust and induction that also ran a 14.6! It did have spoon stickers all over it and easily beat a mildy tuned classic Impreza though... hmmmmmmm....
It's 'kin cold in winter there, being so far from civilisation! I usually stay at the local village b and b, but because of the captive market, you have to book silly early and pay plenty. (It's nice and handy though.) Which is a gamble, as the racing is cancelled if it rains! We'll have to get there when it's warmer, the April one is my next visit.
I thought the conditions were fine Nox tbh. They covered the track in sand and swept it up, then brought out the drying machine for quite some time. Maybe in warmer weather there would be better traction. In my defence also I had brand new tyres fitted the day before not yet bedded in and a service due - must be worth a couple of tenths surely or just wishful thinking...
