Just received the regular e-newsletter from Auto Express which contains a review of the first Chinese car to go on sale in Europe. Wonder how long it will take them to get it right?

"Oh dear! We were expecting so much from China’s European debut – but the Brilliance BS6 is a massive letdown. It falls behind rivals in every area, with poor quality, average dynamics and nondescript styling. The lack of safety kit and terrible crash test rating are real causes for concern. The idea of having a large executive car for the price of a hatchback is appealing but, apart from space, the BS6 offers little else".

SR71 i am not at all surprised.

China has a very large automotive industry but they hardly export any of their products. They make more motorcycles than Japan does, but you never see them outside China.

Reason: Its a communist country where everyone buys from the domestic manufacturers and there are enough people in China to sell the products to.

The motorcycles are absolute rubbish - things like the Chery or Hyosung. Awful contraptions.

It doesnt surprise me that the car is awful too.

As I have said before: We dont NEED or WANT far-eastern tat on our roads. There is enough choice already, and we need to stop this cheap tat being available on the European market, as it is in the interest of Western manufacturers as well as consumers.

Really Palmy?

I thought this would be just up your street! Leather clad, wood panelled air conditioned luxury all for £15k.

Joking aside, I really can't see the point of this car. It reminds me of the old Hyundai Sonata from a (good few) years back. It looks like bland as automotive junk . Even in the pictures you can see that every interior panel is a different colour and how bad must that be in real life? Come back Tata, all is forgiven!

I suppose a few will be flogged off to fat poor americans living in Florida. But for the rest of us, send it straight to the scrap heap where it belongs.

Reminds me of American cars of the 50s; before they cared if people died in car accidents.
I wouldn't be surprised if their next offerings were equal to modern American cars. After that they'll be equal to the Europeans then they'll be in a league of their own.
The same direction in which the Koreans are heading.
I don't like their cars yet but give them a couple of years and they'll be rivalling some of the best cars in Europe.

Apparently only two stars out of five in a crash test. Chery QQ is even worse. Still, once they knock the safety on the head I think we can kiss other makes goodbye.

I've seen a quality audit on the BS6, which places it a little ahead of a 1988 Sonata. The same publication gave the new Sonata, and Kia Spectra, a quality rating on a par with the Vectra, and above Renault, Peugeot, and Fiat family cars in the group.

It was only looking at fit and finish measurables, not ascetics. Basically the Koreans are now only 5 years behind the Japanese, and 3 years behind MB, VAG and BMW.

I recently drove a Spectra in Korea, no real difference to a Primera. The European motor industry is likely to end up producing Exec transport only and in much smaller quantities than they currently do.

Hyosung are Korean and their latest bikes have been getting reasonable reviews. Still not to Japanese standards yet

If people want to buy them then we should let them, depreciation and no buyer come re-sale should put paid to most people wanting a chinese take away. Mind you there are two serious messages here. The first is think about how far Hyundai et al have progressed and shoot thirty years forward and these will be on par. Secondly I think there should be some kind of law that says unless your car withstands certain crash conditions it cant be sold. Two stars is the same as most early 90s western cars. Is that standard still appropriate now? setting a higher standard would have the side effect of pricing some manufacturers out of the European market. Come on EU lets have some legistlation in our favour for once.
