Great idea, or travesty?
PPC magazine this month, report on a BMW 6-pot derv engine going into a Reliant Scimitar.
A modest 180 bhp is the output, but still up on the petrol engine, with around double the torque and double the economy.

Surely its up to the owner - even e types have had some strange engines put in them!

The car was never much of a racer, being more of a GT, so I'd say the choice of engine would suit it, if they introduced a modern version of a Grand Tourer these days the chances are it would have a diesel version, so why not - but they would have to get the mountings/noise level sorted - a modern BMW has much better soundproofing than a 60s/70s car!

I would imagine that sourcing a scrap Beemer with a working 3.0d engine to donate to such a project might be quite tricky, not to mention expensive - but finding the twin turbo version would be nigh-on impossible, surely?

What would either of these power plants cost to buy new as crated motors, I wonder? Would the cars they were fitted into need entirely new electrical systems to cope with the electronic jiggery-pokery that comes with them?

You'd need a crashed 335d or 535d or 635d!

More realistically, the engine they used, the 2.5 6-pot, is available very cheaply, as it went into many cars, not just BMWs.

Ah, is it the old indirect-injection one that went into Omegas and Range Rovers?

I can see that being much more easily obtained, been tempted even by some of the old Beemers and Omegas that still have it fitted, they're going for banger money these days - sigh, and I remember that being state-of-the-art diesel tech!

Why not?

The taboo has been shattered by Audi with their forthcoming R8 V12 TDI.

It's only a matter of time before super-diesels become the norm.

even audi know its not the ultimate option though, they themselves are having the more powerful petrol model R8 v10 as the headliner.
