"Windscreens on vehicles first used before April 1985 must let in 70 percent of light to stay legal. That figure rises to 75 percent for vehicles issued after that date. Front-side windows on all vehicles are required to let in 70 percent of light."

Your right Dan, thats what the laws says. YOu can tint the rear windows as much as you like but the windscreen and front sides must fall into the constraints above. Tinting can be done cheaply with window film but looks rubbish or professionally for about 200 smackers a window.

YEh i agree, if you are going to do it, then you mayaswell do it properly, a cheap exterior finish to a car can completely ruin its looks. Also, i wouldnt tint them too dark, unless you want to look like the mafia. Or even worse, a chav.

My favourites are small black hatchbacks and big black MPVs with blacked out rear side windows. You just know that their saddo owners think they look cool, but their vehicles actually look like black vans.

This is most certainly not stylish. Or cool. Or in any way clever. It is crap.

Article in a motoring mag a while ago, policeman has a meter to check the dark cling film. He said, chances are you will find other things wrong as well after stopping mafioso for light passing ability. Sounded like he was using it as an excuse to stop and check.

You're right Camp Freddie. Let's be honest here, blacked out windows can only really work on a huge Cadillac or something, preferably accompanied by a rapper and his huge entourgage. And then it still looks daft!

You're wearing tights. I can't take lectures on physics from a man in tights. Dancing yes. Physics no!

I'm too old to care about looking cool, but I like to keep the inside of my car cooler and keep prying eyes from desiring the occasional empty water bottle that gets left in sight. My current car isn't tinted, but I'm thinking seriously of doing the back side windows before bombing off to Spain in it (back screen is dealt with by a manufacturer's blind).

Tinting to make a statement is estupido. It's another case of something with a good use being misused.

Well we're safe for now. Thank goodness we're in a bowling alley.

There is no doubt whatsoever that blacking out the windows of your car is one of, if not the most effective ways of declaring you are an utter, utter cretin. However, at £200 a pop I would suggest it is a bit on the steep side. My recommendation would be to save yourself £197.01 and invest instead in a pair of window mounted England flags from your local ASDA superstore. The net effect being exactly the same and you'll be left with nearly two hundred smackers to spend on a gold ring spelling out your name.

....jer-get-meh?

They usually do the number plates as well, as those who have blacked-out windows tend to have illegal number plates as well!

Agree with the other post, I've had cars with non-tinted windows in the past and they get dammed hot - have just the light tint which tends to come with any model other than the base ones - can't see the point in the blacked-out stuff myself unless your a gangster or celeb!

£200 a windows seems a bit steep...

The wife had her Yaris done (when they were first launched) - had all the windows done (besides the windscreen), - the Toyota main dealer only charged £250 for the lot.

yes firebird but that is done with film. I was talking about doing it thoroughly and taking your windows out and having them dipped. There is no comparison in terms of quality. BTW you better hope that plod dont get you for having the front windows tinted

No worries there - she only kept the car for about a year Roll Eyes

Couldn't fault the job though (even if it was film) - no bubbles on it (unlike those you see on chavvy novas from time to time).

I always get the windows on my cars tinted. I wear contact lenses and find that if I don't do it it is quite bright inside the car causing me to have to squint which is uncomfortable.

Admittedly, the tint on my current car is just the wrong side of legal but I have never once been pulled over for the tints in the last 8 years of having them. I think basically the important thing is that the Police can see how many people are in the car and what you're doing. As long as you go for the shade just over the legal limit, I think it is 30% you should be fine. I also think it looks stupid having different levels of tint on different windows, I stick with the same all round and it looks great.
