Then don't let Clarkson get hold of one. I watched his "Supercar Showdown" DVD the other day. He, for no reason I could discern, drove one of the remaining 40 (in the UK) Alpine A610's into a concrete block.....completely destroying it.
He claimed to have forked out for it so I guess it was his to do whatever he liked with but the A610 was the last of the Alpines and a car I've always been rather fond of. Shame when there are so few left.

How times have changed though. 99 bhp was absolutely cutting edge technology, back then. Turbocharged, intercooled, electronic fuel injection, 4 valves per cylinder, double overhead camshaft, etc. Now my humble little Panda has 100 HP. From a nothing little engine!
dont forget also the 1980's nissan micra super turbo, 930cc 110bhp turbo and supercharged. i have seen these tuned to over 220bhp, a lot for 930cc tiny car.

Even modern diesels are knocking on the door of 100bhp/litre - with at least the BMW 2 litre twin turbo beating it, as well as many other diesels with remaps coming in a similar region.
...and will still keep up with their like for like petrol equivalent despite the smoke and less pleasing soundtrack. Just gives motorists a bit more choice!
this myth still persists? There has not been an instance in the entire world history of a like for like equivalent diesel being anywhere near to keeping up with a petrol car. even audi cant do it using brand new technologies with there diesel Le Mans racing cars, they had to get the rules changed to allow bigger engines. show me a standard factory road diesel car with 200bhp/litre, like there are petrol cars.

Super post and a point these Diesel types never seem to understand.
Like for like meaning a 150bhp diesel or a 150bhp petrol. I know that you can extract far greater performance from a petrol engine, but say 10 years ago you couldn't get anything other than economy from a diesel whereas now there is more.

Show me all these factory petrol cars with 200 bhp per litre!
(Put the Lancer Evo FQ400 to one side, a car which comes with issues, as standard.)

That's a fair comment S2. However, I have to say, given the choice of an S2 or any Diesel in the world - the S2 would get it every time!

That's a fair comment S2. However, I have to say, given the choice of an S2 or any Diesel in the world - the S2 would get it every time!
Don't forget that a diesel engine will probably be bigger to produce the same bhp. E.g the 1.8T VAG in it's base tune is 150bhp going up to 225 in factory tune. The 1.9TDI in it's maximum factory spec is 150bhp. While I accept that a 150bhp derv will beat a 150bhp petrol they will likely be different within the range and price.
