well there is the FQ400, which is enough of an example. i dont know what issues you mean about it? i have read in the press recently about tips to avoid the modern diesel engine systems as so many parts are going wrong in them.

I already said forget the FQ400.
Where are all the others then?
The FQ400 is a poor engine.
As standard, at least.

Trust me, there aren't any.
The FQ400 has a poor engine tune and is a limited edition car anyway.

Come up with a mass-produced petrol car with anywhere near 200 bhp per litre.
You can't.

I have been studying this sort of thing for over 30 years, Beach, so i know the score matey.

180bhp/litre is not limited though, thats still in production in the evo 360. oil change after 12 months and 3 years unlimited mileage warranty, so cant be that stressed. VAG could make a new 200bhp/litre car using their supercharger and turbo charger system, supercharger canceling out any drop in torque from having a larger powerful turbo. 280bhp from the 1.4 would be great. of course they dont see a market for it though.

No mass produced car has, or will have, 280 bhp from 1.4 litres, forget it.

can be done with modification though to existing vw engine.
there is a new above 200bhp/litre factory car out,
1500bhp from 7.0 supercharged and turbocharged v8. british supercar. the 1500bhp version is meant for track only but just needs a few extras to get it road registered like the lower powered models.
Keating TKR is the car.

My Westfield has a 2 litre Ford Cosworth engine.

It has been stripped, balanced and blueprinted.
It has had hot cams fitted, the head has been gas-flowed and polished and a huge carbon fibre cold air induction system has been fitted.
The car has been re-mapped and has larger fuel injectors and a boost controller.

It has 190 bhp per litre.

No standard road car built in any numbers is going to beat that...

In fact none have even got close.

I have driven in excess of 200 miles in the FQ400. I know exactly what it can and cannot do.
I would prefer a modified FQ320 and the money instead.
My 375 bhp Lancer Evo 340 was a better road car.

i mentioned earlier about the new british supercar, having read autocars report on it, it seems like just a box of parts and poor build quality thrown together, a definite no goer.
this 200bhp business we talk about, i think as i have mentioned there is no market for it for factory cars. but thats not to say its practical for customer tuning. like you have in your cosfield, and if i had the funds to do it it wouldnt be crazy or unreliable to get 280bhp from the vw 1.4 tsi engine. it cheaper for vw to sell a 280bhp 2.0 tsi instead. which would you rather have though? in a new golf/leon/octavia/s3 with a 280bhp 2.0 or a 280bhp extreme tune 1.4.. there would be split preferences, but for sure the 1.4 would be lighter and have sweeter handling.

talking of 280bhp, i think the new focus RS will have around this output. vw will need to match it of course with their golf, seems like to me they are still going about it in the old ways, although there is the seat COPA version built recently with 280bhp from the 2.0 tsi. looks like they will have a new golf R36, seeing as the new passat R36 has just come out, 4wd 290bhp from a 3.6 litre NA V6. not the right way to go i think. should have gone turbo.

A huge 280 bhp from only 1.4 litres, would mean compromises in other areas.
Take the most powerful HH at the moment, the 261 bhp Audi A3.
That has only 130 bhp per litre yet is already somewhat rough and course, compared to the Golf 197 bhp version.

i think the supercharger would smooth a lot of things out though, would mean the cams dont have to be so wild.

just a guess. but certainly having the turbo in a state of high lag to get the big power doesnt matter when you have a supercharger giving instant responce until the turbo takes over. this would make the power delivery much smoother and make the engine feel more stable.

Nice in theory, but more makers would use it if it was the total answer.
An extra charger adds weight and cost and the supercharger saps power.
A modern twin-turbo set-up is best, overall.
