It looks like the King finally needs to watch out, big time. In the first proper head-to-head i have seen, the new kid on the block matches or beats the 997 TT for;
Power, general pace, handling, acceleration/top speed, feel, stability and fun factor.
For just over HALF the price!
A 997 turbo pilot won't want to meet the forthcoming GT-R-R in a hurry! (Decent amount up on power and also down on weight over the stocker).
the performance can only take the nissan so far, it is after all just a nissan, snob value & more plentiful supply gives the superior car the edge --- gtr's just end up in the hands of chavs when they get old, tuned within a gnats bolx of destruction

Anyone who has the money to comfortably afford a 911 Turbo wouldn't look twice at any Nissan, warp-speed fast or not.
Supercar quick and capable in spades but no 911 ever gets to ten years old and finds itself adorned in daft stickers with a bean-can for a tailpipe....which will happen to every ... single ... GTR ... sold. I would stake my kidneys on it.
Fast, fun, VFM ... I have no doubt ... but it's the automotive equivalent of Britney Spears. You would, but you wouldn't take it home to meet your mum.
Nissan GTR .... the trailerpark supercar.

...and I'm not judging GTR owners by that before I get flamed into next week. I'm sure they're a fine bunch with what will be a mighty fine car. My comment was to highlight the inevitable effect of the intangible (image, branding etc) on the tangible .... buyers. I would wager that lesser performing, similarly priced 997s (Carreras etc., heck, even used ones) will outsell the arguably pound-for-pound more capable GTR.
....and yes, given the choice I'd take any 911 at the price.

Brand snobbery is plain daft. The Nissan is, by far, the better value and that's from someone who rates the 997 TT as the best all-round supercar ever sold to the public. It's in a different price bracket altogether and good luck to it, too! It deserves to sell by the shed full.
I think if you're gonna make that kind of outlay on a new car, you're gonna be savvy to how much you're likely to lose....So the buyer will either be so extravagently wealthy as to make the loss on re-sale insignificant or the purchase is the culmination of a lifelong dream and the buyer will hang on to it for keeps; then there's no expectation of recouping any cash. You forked out, you got a car.
Still rather a lot though ....

i reckon the gtr is every bit as capable, if not more so than the eponymous porsche....that said, im with the poster who suggests that they appeal to different markets..its not about brand loyalty and badge snobberry.there will always be the exception to the rule, but by and large, someone considering a top spec 911 will never consider a gtr.....and, to be honest, for those considering the gtr, nothing else will do..these cars only compete on performance, not on price, image or market sector...
After watching the videos at autocar site of the shootout (gt-r vs porsche turbo vs m3), i went to the corner shop and spent £5 on lotto tickets. I would really like to own that GT-R (in black). I feel sorry for the tester whose new M3 was totally thrashed.
Watching the shootout it seemed to have done that without any mods added. It was both quicker 0-60 and 0-100 as well as quicker round the track. Given it was only an out lap followed by a fast lap it shows the potential of the GT-R.

It does not matter how good the GT-R is; it does not have a German badge, so it will be looked down upon & passed over in favour of less capable & considerably overpriced machinery with a 'badge' on it.
if nissan imported some team NISMO racing japanese girls in branded bikinis and gave them the job of sales at nissan dealerships. i'm sure some germanbadgephiles would be converted. or basically most men.
....... There's got to be a hundred reasons why i should listen to diesel owners, but right now, i can't think of any.
