On my way to work today, I was coming towards a speed camera I pass every morning. It is on the dual carriageway set at 40ish due to major road works being carried out there and this nutter comes blasting past without a care in the world. The camera flashes him and he brakes violently as if he can beat the cameras lens micro second capture time. The guy almost drove through the cones into the other carriageway clipping a cone and forcing it into my path nice wake up call at six in the morning. ____(OO=[II]=OO)___ (O=0000=O) Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that, who cares? ...He's a mile away and you've got his shoes.

Talking of that...whence i was on my way to Edinburgh we had just gotten of the south side of the 4th road bridge and it was set at 40 for road works. We slow down and this moron comes screaming past us giving us a look like we were going at 3mph when he ws doing atleast 60 in a 40..

Nice one, thats what I call justice, maybe not such a bad invention after all.

BTW...if anyone can remember my case... I had my trial...and TF for resonable doubt! Still a clean license after 18 years!

I heard today that in Leeds someone is doing a trial with a satellite thingy that won’t allow you to go over the speed limit, and if you do attempt do to so it puts the cars brakes on to slow you down again… If you are clever enough to work out an invention like that, you should also have enough common sense to keep it to yourself and thus not inflict the miserable box of technocrap on the rest of us!

Think thats been around for a bit, W, I'm sure I remember seeing it on tv a year or two back. In 30 and 40 zones its actually not a bad idea as thats where most of the accidents are. Useful if you have too many points and are about to lose your licence though!
|
| |
|

|
It's not useful in the slightest, if you are about to lose your licence anyway you are probably not a very good driver and should not be on the road. Thinking of a speed limiting device is one thing, but to put the idea into practice you'd have to be a complete and utter boring idiot.
|
| |
|

|
Oh dear who rattled your cage!
So you don't think that its a good idea to restrict speed in areas where the majority of road injuries and deaths take place as you find that boring?!
I think most people would accept that keeping speed down in 30 and 40 limits is a good idea, obviously you are one of the "I know better" brigade!
Its interesting to note that you feel that anyone with points on their licence "are probably not a very good driver and should not be on the road" - rather a sweeping generalisation! And one which would currently include a very large number of drivers, several on here I'd suspect!

If you are caught by a speed camera it's your own fault for speeding and being oblivious to the camera... I have no symapthy for people who fall into that category. If you receive points for dangerous driving or causing an accident then you diserve everything you get... 12 points and you win a bicycle. There is no problem with speeding in open areas, and it is there that a speed restrictor would really hurt; imagine trying to overtake a caravan towing twit if your own car will only do 60.

Sweeping generalisations again - and if you had cared to actually read my other post you will see I said " In 30 and 40 zones its actually not a bad idea as thats where most of the accidents are", I took care not to mention de-restricted roads, as some of them are suitable for higher speeds, though many are not.

I saw that and decided to ignore it actually… I like knowing that if I wanted to I could do 100 in a 30 limit but I don’t because I’m sensible. What I object to is being governed and having unrelenting restrictions placed upon me because other people can’t be trusted to drive properly. What a state of affairs it would be if we weren’t even allowed to choose our own top speed; it’s the nanny state combining with big brother.
|
| |
|

|
What makes you think that you are safe at that speed, in fact what makes you think that you are so good a driver that you can ignore the rules of the road?? They are there not just for other drivers, but to prevent people like you causing mayhem by driving beyond what is sensible and what they can handle. Such arrogance is a danger itself!! Remember the old saying "Pride cometh before the fall!"

If I had a choice between speed restrictors or speed bumps and chicanes in urban streets, I'd choose speed restrictors every time. However, I don't see them being used anytime soon. There are loads of restrictions in life, and unfortunately, it's the minority of morons who make them necessary for the majority of us. There are a lot of people who get done for 34mph but are driving otherwise legal vehicles in an otherwise sensible manner; and there is a significant number of un-taxed/licensed/insured drivers who drive at much higher speeds but who don't get caught because they break the law in every important respect. These people will find a way around speed restrictors too.
Well we're safe for now. Thank goodness we're in a bowling alley.

Just bought a Garmin gps for our trip to europe just trying it out here at the weekend and the speed camera warnings were endless these cameras are taking the fun totally out of driving these days ____(OO=[II]=OO)___ (O=0000=O) Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. But what would speed restrictors be set to. The actual speed limit, or the speed indicated on the speedometer ? As we are all aware, most speedometers read around between 1-2 mph over the speed you are doing. Cruise control can do a similar job, if you are really worried about picking up points. Safer too in my opinion, as it allows you to accelerate around slower vehicles.

Just thought to add to this. On our holidays in France this year the speed cameras saftey zones were Defined quite well I choose to ignore the Garmin to my peril. A blacked out Peugeot 407 with a camera on the Boot on a sneeky side road Flashed us @ 130Kmh on a 110Kmh stretch. Still havent hear anything not sure if they will persue it, that was over a month ago now. holidays just a distant memory ____(OO=[II]=OO)___ (O=0000=O) Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. Speed cameras are certainly a bad idea. I hate them. Also they are there because speeding is apparently dangerous... so if it's so dangerous why do they assume you survived the speeding offence and send you a ticket in the post; the very least they could do would be to check you were alive first before sending you a fine. But as we all know, speeding fines are not intended to make us safe, but as another way to tax us.

One of the speed detector manufacturers (rhymes with Alex) has a very interesting series of photos on their website - of hidden camera vans. They increase the zoom until you just see them - behind a bush, on someone's driveway etc etc. Absolutely impossible to see no matter how good a driver you are. So don't assume you'll see them all!
