As I posted (rather offtopically) on the FIAT 500 thread, my beloved Colt CZT has to go. As a result of an evil masterstroke on the part of Mrs Boig's employer our sensible car, curently a Golf TDious has to go back from whence it came .... which means we need to pool our resources and buy a car that fits the following criteria:
1. An estate or 5-series sized saloon 2. A Diesel
Budget will be between 15-20k. Not necessarily new but no more than 24 months old.
My current favoured options are:
Audi A4 Avant Tdi Volvo V50 D5 Mercedes-Benz C270 CDi estate (probably used but I'd be interested to see what deals are haggleable on the run out models)
The problem with all those is that they're, well, dull. I'm looking for interesting alternates....
(and no, a Skoda Octavia is not interesting. I'm not having an Accord estate either, on account of it being the ugliest car in the world, ever).

Interesting take on the requirements there, Bamford!!
If it weren't for its rather extreme looks that might be feasible. As it is, I can't see Mrs. B going for it. I'd definitely have another Mitsubishi, and would be interested to know what the plans are for the Lancer range in light of the Evo X.
If they could take that styling, it looks fabulous, remove anything overtly scoopy/spoilery and fit a 220-230 bhp engine for sub-Golf GTi money, I'd be in. In their tradition of slightly ludicrous model designations they could call it the Evo X WF-SPQ "Wife Friendly - Still Pretty Quick".

I have a pathological hatred of Vauxhalls. Can't stand 'em. Would move house if one appeared on the drive.
As an SUV, the CR-V is not really my cuppa. Would consider the Tonka-toy FR-V but Mrs Boig hates Hondas (and Fords come to mention it) about as much as I hate Vauxhalls, so out too I'm afraid.
Seat Altea. No objection to a bit of Auto Emocion in theory but a massive objection to driving a car about as pretty as a baboon's arse. Also sports an identikit copy of the worst grille ever ... the Jaguar S-Type's.

If it were a Scooby, It'd have to have the Forrester. Goes against the SUV/not my thing grain but I love 'em. I hear the Legacy is pretty good as well, looking quite smart these days to boot, saw quite a few in Devon recently and was impressed. Don't do tractor engines though, do they?

Forget about the depreciation and the Peugeot 407 SW 2.7 V6 HDI looks like a decent motor? From £19,995 used. Similarly, the C6 with the same engine available from £25k, lovely car!
Alfa Romeo 159 Sportwagon with the 1.9 diesel engine. Looks the dogs naughty bits! Practical, Good spec. 0-60 in 9.6 seconds, 46 mpg average. You don't see many about either.
Build quality may put some people off, though.
What Car says "The smaller diesel engine is the pick of the range, with strong, smooth performance and excellent refinement. Not only will it return an average of 47.1mpg, but it only costs £500 more than the entry-level engine. The 159's basic specification is very impressive, with electric windows all round, dual zone climate control, remote central locking, seven airbags, cruise control, a leatherbound multifunction steering wheel, stability control and a CD player."

Nothing wearing a Pug badge these days is a decent motor. Wouldn't touch one with a barge pole.

We're working on the assumption it will rack up a fair mileage and all the other boring practical considerations that give diesel a slight edge, but petrol would be my preference.

There's a 159 S/wagon
....Hmmm, Boig like the 159. Boig also like the Alfa oil burners. This ones going on the list.

....or maybe not. Just had a look at the Alfa website: Yup, gorgeous. But also had a look at some "nearly new" examples on AutoTrader. The depreciation is savage.
Bit dissapointed TBH, thought the 159 would hold up pretty well given its sooooo much better looking than the 3er A4 or C and from the examples I've seen close up, build quality looks up to scratch as well.
