I'm looking to change my Civic Type R at the moment and have so far been for a test drive in a Focus ST, an '06 WRX and an Astra VXR. The ST was nice, well put together, but lacked excitement and actually felt slower than my Type R despite having more power (as soon as the test drive was over we went round the same route with the Type R). This morning we went out in a '06 WRX, which was a lot faster than the Type R, but looked like a taxi from the 80's on the inside. We had a look at the STI version - for £20k why can't they fit the interior from that into the WRX? Straight after being at Subaru we went round to the Vauxhall dealer. The bloke there was bragging about how the Astra was loads quicker than the WRX, and I thought he was probably talking rubbish. However, after being out in the VXR it certainly seemed faster to us. It probably has a higher 0-60 time than the WRX because it hasn't 4WD, but on the move it was unnervingly quick. When we got back in the Civic it was like when I borrow my girlfriend's Fiesta! My only doubt now is whether or not to wait to see what the '06 Type R is like. However, without it being fitted with a turbo I can't see it having the drivability of the VXR because you have to rev the nuts off it to get it really going.

Barkys right about the VXR logo appealing to chavs! Saw an ancient Astra that looked as if it's been stolen from a scrapheap and recklessly driven through a plastic factory. It was covered in tribal stickers and undeserved VXR logos!

Did you manage to get any discount off the price from the dealer?

When Vauxhall put the VXR badge on the Monaro, it had a good brand there, then came the Astra and Vectra - fine, but for me they lost the plot when they announced people mover VXR models. That for me just completely devalues the VXR brand - can you imagine Mercedes creating an AMG A class, Honda a Type-R FRV, or Audi and RS2 - it just doesn't work to the point where its pointless.

I don't know Dja.. I think that's a bold move and something different. Yes it's crazy to have a Meriva VXR, but it all adds to the fun.
I certainly know what I'd go for if I was going to get a people carrier - a Zafira GSi or VXR.

Hi Sl1ck, Yep I did get a discount from the dealer, they were very happy to negotiate. Also they are holding the P/Ex price for my trade-in, despite it being overdue. I certainly can't fault the dealer. Still waiting though !

i think its great to have a VXR people carrier. Think about it and it makes perfect sense. Middle aged men with large families, still like to drive, but have the added luggage (being a family) sounds like a good idea to me. VXR corsa mighe be giving clio buyers something else to look at too.

The Vectra VXR will make a great used buy in 2-3 years!

Finally plumped for the Astra VXR and placed an order for one at the start of January. It's due for delivery in 6-8 weeks. Still haven't seen one on the roads yet.

Hi Wheelsy, hope you have better luck with delivery times than I did. You'll certainly be pleased with the VXR when it arrives though. I've clocked up about 200 miles, mostly local runs. What can I say....wow....she certainly exceeded my expectations. It'll be nice to see how flexible the engine is once she's run in. As for looks, she's far too sporty to think shes a Zafira ! Especially when you're on the move. Once I've run her in, I'll report back again.

What about the Astra SRI 200? That's got as much power as a Golf GTI & costs nearly £4000 less! That's probably the better bet, as it probably doesn't suffer with the torque steer that the VXR does.

The setup of the car is nowhere near as performance orientated as the VXR though, Really it's just a fast engine in an almost bog standard Astra.
The Lotus guys did some serious tweakage with the Astra VXR.

Breathed a sigh of relief today when I read in Autocar about the new Type R. I'd considered waiting around for it but I'm glad now I ordered the Astra VXR. Autocar suggested that the power would remain unchanged at 197bhp but from a 2.2 litre rather than 2.0 litre for improved torque. There was mention of a quicker Type RR version but they suggested that might have no sound-proofing, air-con or back seats! Seems like the VXR has the best of both worlds - very fast and well kitted out at the same time.

0-60mph 6.0secs, top speed 150mph, under £12K and built to perfection with superb build quality and you know it'll be reliable what am i talking about well it's a Honda Integra DC5 Type R of course and its looks really good my choice of a fun car prefer it than a Astrs VXR or other hot hatches at the moment the Vtech is AMAZING!

The Monaro VXR now has 500bhp following the addition of a supercharger to the mighty 6.0 V8! All that for under £36,000!
