What do you get if you cross a Mercedes CLS and an Aston DB9 ...... and let a French peasant farmer choose the engine? ........ Wink

It's a great engine mate, you'll have to live with it!

Er, i wont have to live with it because i wont be driving one...

I doubt if its that good.

I spent a few months last year with a VW Phaeton V10 TDI. Sent it back in the end because i couldnt stand the engine. Noisy and harsh, with uneven power delivery.

Usual behaviour from a tractor engine..

Experts in the field of car engines are saying that this V12 diesel is a fantastic lump.

More power than a Ferrari Enzo and twice the torque.

How bad is that Palmy?

it will never go into production as peugeot have publicly said they would loose money. nobody buys the 607 and why would they buy another big peugeot?

Guile, youre right. Unfortunately nobody would buy it in any numbers to make it viable...

Peugeot would lose another chunk of money, which is what they dont need. Theyve been losing a fortune ever since they went in on the Eurotunnel as a Partner.

I think the 908 is a beautiful car though.

Maybe if they put a proper petrol V12 in it, and the emphasis was on extreme luxury and extreme performance, they may begin to recoup their image as a producer of fine performance cars.

Theyve made many in the past, (504 coupe, 605 SVE24, MVS Venturi 260, the 1988 Le Mans winning car, 205 1.9 GTI) before they morphed into the bland creator of gawpy-faced dross theyre churning out today.

That engine is twice as economical as a V12 petrol would be and 700 bhp is easily enough for anyone.
The 886 lbs-ft is mighty impressive too.

Another angle is, why put an engine in that will do about 10 mpg and not be any more powerful?

I drive a BMW M3 CSL, about as 'petrol-head' as you can get bar none, but i do appreciate the good points of diesel too.

No Bamford.

This time i do disagree.

There is NO WAY that a diesel V12 producing 700 BHP would be twice as economical as a petrol equivalent.

My VW Phaeton V10 TDI struggled to do 22 mpg. It produced 300bhp but it never felt like it. The power was all in one place and it was unresponsive & dull.

It was like an intercity train, pulling away from a station. All you could feel was the torque and the dull drone of the engine.

An S500 has 306 bhp, and is lively and smooth, yet does between 23 and 28mpg.

This performance diesel nonsense again. Diesel engines are for A) trucks, or B) small cars with the emphasis purely on fuel economy.

When you start trying to turn them into racing cars and high-end luxury stuff, its a joke and a waste of time.

Whadya mean THIS time Palmy? Razz

You ALWAYS write off every aspect of every diesel car mate, come on! Wink

You see, i just sold a BMW 535d, with a DMS remap. I have nothing but praise for that engine. Very powerful, revved to 5100 rpm, so had a wide powerband, would do 175 mph after derestriction and regularly caught petrol car drivers with their trousers down in 'instant combat'. (Honestly).
I have no reason to lie Palmy, i have one of the best petrol engines ever made in my car, in the best ever state of tune.
If i were NOT to support the better diesel engines, i would be fooling myself.
Oliver hates diesel too, but ask him. I have been consistent throughout when derv has been mentioned in our regular msn chats.
I really like the latest ones on the whole.

You don't give them fair credit mate.
Tell me a car which would do what my 535d did.

Over 40mpg on a run, averaged 31 mpg in the time i had it, did 175 mph derestricted and had 334 bhp/506 lbs-ft. It was awesome and even sounded quite good when going for it.
