Can anyone recommend decent competitive car insurance companies. I am an average driver wiht an average car
31 Male, Focus TDCI 2002, 18K mile personal and commuting driving, 12 years NCB, living in Nottingham. Looking for Third party fire and theft but if comp is only bit more expensive (£20-30) then prob take that.
In the past I have found Churchill amongst the cheapest but I have gone with Tesco the past 2 years.
Best I have got so far is TPFT is £274 Churchill, £280 Tesco ( both without options). I dont want all the unnecessary options like legal cover, courtesy car etc. Churchill want extra £125 for Comp cover!
I am with Direct line and have been for the past 9+ yrs and they have always been the lowest for me current premium £320 approx for a Honda CR-V SE sport auto - group 11 or 12
each to their own on this one and shop around. sheilas wheels wont be any use as thats women only. a guy called akro sodgi on here didnt have insuriance so thats the cheepest optoin but can be a but useless if you crash or kill a child
I'd suggest Confused.com as well, but don't just go for the cheapest, check the small print.
BTW has anyone else noticed that in the Sheilas Wheels advert for half the time the car is going backwards! Just look at the backgrounds they are using!!
There is no one cheapest company as they are all better for a particular car or type of driver. However, i have always found direct line and privilege to be competitive for an average car.
OK thanks. I have used Direct Line and Confused before but they were bettered by Tesco. Will get an online quote and see. 2 questions:
1) Normally when you buy on the web you get an introdutory/new customer discount and then next year you get a renewal quote without the discount. So, rather than accepting the renewal quote I go and get a new quote from the same company on the website. So, even though I am a current customer, by getting a quote online I am classed as a "new" customer and get a discount. Is this OK, ie. is the quote valid?
2) For third party fire and theft cover, does the amount of mileage you do affect the price? I would have thought not?

Ditto. It will do a multiple company search for you. I have used it a few times. It returns the quotes from many companies and you can check the small print as well, very important.
Last year and the year before last I bought my insurance from direct lines website and took advantage of the online discount. even though I was already a customer I was still able to do this - having said that this year my renewal quote was the best price
I went on Confused.com and got a quote for £218 from Quinn Direct. This is £70 cheaper than my renewal. Never used this company before - has anyone used this company?
I've used confused.com in the past - its okay for a first look, but if you look at the list of insurers they have searched there are some missing, so best to look into those yourself.
Virgin is one that it doesn't cover, they offered my best quote + you can pay monthly at 0% interest... so why stump up a lump sum all at once?

In reply to Q1, I was with More Than last year, paying £415, and received my renewal notice for this year quoting £420. As with every year I did a shop around, and Confused. com found me a quote for the same cover for £320. It would be the same cover, as it's with More Than! I rang them (More Than) to ask if that was right, and said, 'Sure, cancel your existing policy, and take up the new one...it's cheaper because as you are buying online, there's less admin'! (So the cancellation, and preparation of new certificates is less work?) Craigjm, I would appreciate it if you could expend on your answer please!!
The past is history...The future a mystery. This moment is a gift...That's why it's the present.
I just got a decent price with MoreThan, about £70 cheaper than any others. For the past three years I've gotten an online quote with my existing insurer (usually £120 less than the renewal) and then called them up to have them meet that price, they did it every year. Never accept a renewal.
I agree with what has been said about renewal quotes. Insurance know that majority of us just pay up - particularly if we pay by direct debit and we don't notice or bother with the increase.
I too got a quote from confused.com and went with not the cheapest but reasonably well known and a clear website - budget.
I am with AA Insurance Service and for several years now have always got a cheaper quote by applying a new customer online. One time I even rang them up asking if they can match the online quote - they said no! So went ahead with the online quote. I have always found AA Insurance Services to the be the cheapest for me. I've tried those "women only" companies and they are always more expensive so its a load of c*** when they say they are the cheapest.
just reminded me to start looking for new insurance soon....
i found it quite hard to get a decent quote with 9 points, been 23 and live in hull!! but do have 4 yrs no claims
tried moneysupermarket.com and had a great quote of £475 fully comp, which i thought was a decent price, rang them up and said i was misquoted and would instead be £1100 i just put the phone down.
tried elephant.co.uk £1495!!! and that was only tpft
rang a few out of the auto trader and ended up with £410 tpft, which isnt bad
Tried most of the suggestions above but got around £260 for TPFT and £300 plus for Comp. Rang Tesco to cancel renewal quote but they did me a deal - £261 for Comp cover.
So, like advised above, don't accept the renewal quote and shop around. Or at least phone your current insurer and ask if they can match or beat the best price you have found which was what they did for me this time. The Tesco salesman was very pushy though, he wouldn't let me cancel and insisted he pass me through to another dept who could offer me a better quote, which they did.
