Are these one of the bargain performance cars now, cheap to buy yet quick and rarely seen?

That's why I liked mine.

They are cheap to buy, cheap to tune for good power, reliable, quick and rare. I find them good looking too, apart from the horrible chrome grill.

I'm sorting the handling and braking on mine in the next few weeks.

Fit the bonnet from an early one, they did not have the chrome grille. Underated car the R8 series of Rovers

The hatchback turbo is even rarer still, indeed any 200 3dr hatch from that era. Did they ever make a 5dr hatch Turbo?
