on the other hand, those shanty towns one sees on the telly?

You're wearing tights. I can't take lectures on physics from a man in tights. Dancing yes. Physics no!

your mum has a shanty town?...al to herself?....thats just capitalism run riot...one upmanship.....a wanton display of wealth....unless ya meant she has an alto...in which case, condolences...shanty town is probably a more economical long term prospect tho.......

Thanks- i like my alto-ok it not perfect but it's a brillant first car to drive , steering is easy control are ok, it get me from point A-B with no problem. obviously when i get better at driving at high speed i probably get better car. This great car to drive in a town- not a city car obviously.

My Mum only has an Alto, because some idiot smashed into her Swift (the old one, not the shiny new one that you can play car ice hockey with Big Grin) and shunted her into the car in front so it was a total write off. And because the swift had dropped in price since she bought it, we could only get an Alto on insurance.

This is in a household where my Dad's Vauxhall Vectra is considered 'the good car'

Not particularly. She didn't really like her Swift so much but more than the Alto. She really loved her old Metro though, and so did I. It was rubbish in working terms but had so much heart and every dent made it slightly cooler.

surely, parking two Suzuki Altos next to each other, in this country requires Planning Permission? Ninja

Haha.

I'm trying to persuade her to get a new car, or my Dad to get a new one, maybe a range rover, not that we need one.

On the plus side it's covered by that warranty, the engine is probably safe and rather good for the 0-40 in town driving and it shouldn't implode anytime soon.

On the negative side... everything else. It's a deathtrap on wheels (no airbags?!? no ABS... nothing), much less comfortable than many secondhand alternatives, IMO less attractive than the alternatives, incapable of motorway driving and with a high insurance group for such a small car.

Stick with it for now, it'll do and once it starts to get a bit tatty you can push it off a cliff safe in the knowledge it wouldn't have got anything second hand.

As a serious point, before you buy a car in future, always check reviews and similar. Also for cost effectiveness second hand tends to be better.

Top speed is 96mph btw, not 110. Just says that on the speedo (they couldn't afford the ink for 120, 130 and 140). Personally I wouldn't like to go much over 80, let alone 90 in an Alto.

Range Rover the best all-round car in the world.

I miss mine, tempted to get another one someday.

First of all it's has air-bags both on driver-side and the passenger side.
second it is rather comfortable, the insurance is lower because it's 1.1GTL. No ABS but is that bad?.
