Well it depends what condition it's in.

If you are not in a rush, yes!
There are lots of cars in that group, if you like the Polo's looks over all the others (Fiesta, Ka, Corsa, etc, etc ,etc), then go for it - its a typical Supermini, though a bit pricy compared with most of the others and probably you could get better equiped similar cars from other manufactureres for the same money - just look at a Citreon C2.

polo's tend to be over priced & the 1.0 is far too small for the car budget is?

But would be cheap on insurance - its a first car, remember - try looking at those 1.2/3s - they aren't much difference insurance-wise but so much better performance-wise.

I had a Seat Arosa 1.0 (VW Lupo) when the first came out and it was fairly underpowered. The Polo uses the same 50bhp unit I believe and is obviously a lot heavier. I would avoid this engine if I were you. Why not try the Corsa 1.0 12V as it is lighter and has a characterful 3 cylinder thrum?

My first car was a 1.2 Clio. Great on petrol, fairly nippy and easy to park (crucial for first car)

For a first car, its hard to better a Ford Ka. Wish they'd been around when I got my first, instead of the woeful Citroen AX.

Not keen on the bumper on the Ka. Looks a bit..cheap.

What model is it? Plenty of Polo generations.

Good car, but 1.0 will be woefully slow. Better looking at a 1.2 or 1.4 if you can stretch to that. Depending on what age you are looking at, you could even look at the VW Fox; although it's a class below, it's actually quite large (for an ickle car ) & almost treads on the toes of the Polo sizewise.
