Experts reckon oil production has about peaked but demand is continuing to rise because of the growth of the economy in China etc. That means the price will continue to rise as it's becoming more scarce.

Thank gawd i am averaging 40 mpg in the Panda, 40 mpg in the CRV and an incredible 35 mpg in the Westy.
35 mpg from a car with the same 0-120 mph as a Veyron. Big Grin

At what point will it no longer become viable to have a diesel in preference to petrol?

It's madness that diesel should cost so much more than petrol, which itself is massively overpriced.

Day to day costs such as servicing are similar to petrol - so just compare the combined mpg figures - with mine the diesel is about 33% better than the petrol - so the price differential would have to be that to make me consider switching. I would also add that, with the right mindset, its easier to drive a diesel economically than a petrol.

There is the purchase cost, but secondhand the difference is less and will aslo be reflected in resale -if you intend to keep it 'til it drops then its accademic anyhow!

The Fife example, I seem to recall, was just a wee bit of cynical profiteering given the panic-buying going on up here.

I'm in Glasgow and my usual Shell station was sold out of fuel last night, my next usual one was out of ordinary diesel, only having petrol and super-duper diesel, whatever they call it.

Was pleasantly surprised to find an Esso just down the road which was deserted and had all the fuel one could wish for. Still £1.18.9 though!

It's gone a bit silly up here, no one seems to be believing that supplies will be OK as long as no-one panic buys. Silly sausages.

I queued for about 10 minutes up here near Aberdeen to fill up on Monday evening. Cost about £50 for almost a full tank. The most annoying thing was ,in the queue to pay at the till, the four people in front of me all payed less than a fiver. That's why there are long queues.

I always fill completely. What is the point of queueing regularly to put £10 in?
It's more expensive that way!

derv seems to be from 119 to 122 here .. not seeing any obvious profiteering OR any queues.
how nice of a union to bring it's members out on strike creating panic just as the tourist season should be picking up ... seen reports saying 99% of the grangemouth workers had voted to say they didn't want to take things as far as a strike

why is it when I stand on my head that sometimes, just sometimes ......?

Yes I noticed that too in the BBC write up - they actually voted for action short of strike action...

I see some petrot stations are introducing a maximum £15 worth of fuel per customer.
I wold have liked to see a minimum of £15 worth as well. That would stop the "station hoppers".
Come to think of it, the plonkers with more money than sense would still pay the £15 , even if they could only squeeze in a fivers worth.
