Always been a bit partial towards an Aston. Not saying its nicer but it has its own place in the scheme of things.
Had a trip around the factory a few years ago, superb day out.

One of the finest looking cars ever made. So good looking that AM have made all their other cars look like it.

I had a borrow of one last year. One of the best cars I have ever driven (I still have the score marks on the driveway where I tried to get on there as well. shh... don't tell anyone )

The DB9 is an excellent car, and looks beautiful. However, it is "modern cool", so is not really cool at all. It's a great GT, but it's no match for a Ferrari F430 on the road. Cool Car, er no, not since Aston have become so over hyped and no longer the gentlemans sports car. If you want an unassuming, cool car, buy an SLR McLaren, just another Merc to non car enthusiasts and a Toyota Aygo. If the Aston was't so over stated, it would be the machine of choice. But it isn't. So, Ferrari F430, excellent, but too brash. DB9. Good GT, but over stated for an Aston. Porsche 911 Turbo. That's more like it.
Elementary, my dear Clarkson.

I don't know what you mean when you say a McMerc SLR is just another Mercedes to regular people. I was at a Bonhams auction where a SLR was present along with this family. The man was very enthusiastic, having a good look at all the classics, lifting bonnets, talking and laughing. His wife and children looked bored out of their minds and I heard a boy (no older than 12) complaining that cars were stupid. Anyway, the man dragged the rest of his family around the line of cars until they got to the SLR. When I last looked at them the kids were getting really excited about it and the woman was delighted at how the doors swung upwards. Aaaaanyway, the DB9 is a beautiful GT with looks that have men weak at the knees. However, it has outdated mechanics and as unreliable as a computer with smoke coming out of the back, which is kinda what makes it an Aston.

Yes, that's what I was trying to say. This is what makes it an Aston Martin.

I love the DB9. They look stunning on the roads and stunning on the driveway. But for me, my favourite car is still the F430
You're wearing tights. I can't take lectures on physics from a man in tights. Dancing yes. Physics no!

I was in Mayfair in London a few days ago. There were the usual suspects parked up - BMW, Range Rover, 911, Ferrari 550, etc. However (and I had time to watch because I was waiting for someone) the car that everybody passing was turning their heads to see was a black DB9. It looked great - everybody wanted that car. The 550 was almost invisible next to it.
And as far as a McMerc SRL being cool and understated, I think it's probably the uncoolest car you can buy for any amount of money.

Oops - I meant SLR, of course...

It's a beautiful car, unforunately, thanks to AM's lazy designers, it looks just like all the other AM's in the range! Unless you need 2 next to useless rear seats, you might as well buy the Vantage.

"Wow, we really hit the nail on the head with the Vanquish styling, huh?"
"Sure did! Now onto making some more. Should we just copy the very successful styling or shoot ourselves in the foot by taking a risk and crossing our fingers with a completely new design that will no doubt cost quite a bit while theres limited cash?"
5 months, eh? New record for most pointless revival?

Is there some unwritten forum rule that states that you cannot read & respond to 'old' threads? As you can see, I am a new member & rather than start endless threads that probably have been started before, I just start by looking for ones from the past, if that is Ok by yourself?

Sorry, Prof, you can stick your Porches and Ferraris - I just love the DBs styling and would have it just for that alone - who cares about it being outrun - its a GT - Grand Touring - for Pete's sake, it aint a racer!!

I used to like the DB9 until i went in one.
I delivered one for a client recently, which involved pulling it up onto a trailer, and towing it behind a Range Rover in an enclosed trailer.
I drove it a very short distance but was interested to see what it was like. The engine is magnificent, and the exterior styling close up is fabulous.
But it was a disappointing car all round. Cheap, nasty, plasticky interior & lack of specification. Wheres the navigation system? Or the decent hifi system? Or the hands-free phone kit??
The dash and lack of kit was like a car from the mid 90s, not a modern-day supercar.
Aston went through a bad time, the DB7 was utter rubbish, but when the DB9 came out i thought "Thats more like it!"
Shame the experience doesnt live up to it. The Range Rover i drove to tow it with was a better-built and more luxurious experience.
There is no doubt that the Mercedes Benz SLR McLaren is a far superior car. I absolutely love those, theyre fantastic and i would love to own one.
There is a very good reason why it costs twice the price of a DB9 - its a far superior car.

One of those "hearts over heads" decisions, Palmy - I just prefer its looks to the SLR - also why would you expect a car costing half the cost of the other to be as good inside?

Why not buy a Porsche 911 or Mercedes SL 63 AMG then?
Elementary, my dear Clarkson.

the slr merc has the cabin quality of a c180...ie totally sh*te.....and it looks like a 12 year olds impression of a supercar drawn on the back of his school book......and no, this isnt cos im havin a pop at ya palmy and your love of mercs.....i dont love the db9 either....i do love the new 599 ferrari, qwhich many find ugly...and i adore the scaglietti...reminds me of the glory days of big front engined continent crushing gt ferraris......

Chaps - i absolutely love the Scaglietti, it is a wonderful car. Pal of mine has a blue 54 plate one which really is as you say Big G, a continent crusher. I love it.
I saw a new 599 in New Cavendish Street W1 a couple of days ago and it is weird looking but no doubt a fab car. And it is in the tradition of the old front engined V12 ferraris, which im a fan of. Id even like an old 412 - there are quite a few immaculate ones around London..
SLR M-B is far superior inside to the DB9 - and a superior experience on the road and track too.
Porsche 911 and SL AMG - both superior also. I would love a 911 or an SL, theyre 2 of the very best cars you can buy at any price. Both are around £90,000 which in this company makes them good value.

Agree with you superman, it is better than starting threads that probably have been started previously. Also agree with the notion that all AM's look to samey. I get the point about one successful design, but are AM's designers so devoid of imagination that they cannot come up with another classic for us to savour?
