I actually like it. Bringing high quality convertible to the masses at an affordable price relatively to the A4, 3 Series or merc C lass convertibles. And i don't think the Phaeton is pointless. Most reviews rate it highly as a car and it would have sold well if it was not for the badge.

Might have to use a Megaphone to chat them up over the idle of the engine though.
You can always go for the 3.2 V6 4 motion if you don't mind paying for the petrol.

It's not a convertible, just a 4 door saloon masquerading as a coupe.

So it's pointless then. The sad irony, which was lost on VW board, is that the badge has always held a certain status on affordable cars, but that status was undermined by pinning it to a deliberately luxury motor. It looks just a wrong on the Touareg too.
Looks, and will be built, a whole lot better than the 407 coupe sack-o-sh*te the base models will compete against and vastly cheaper than the CLS500 in V64M guise, whilst still offering 0-60 in 5.5 and on to 150. Given it's a scratchcard Passat, shouldn't be very expensive to maintain either.
What's not to like? (apart from the fact they've done a VolVaux and removed a seat).
....Which means it won't sell and will suffer horrific depreciation .... which means I'll get a cheap one in a few years time.
Nice work VeeDub, a welcome return to form.

That would be the Jetta that is the best selling VW in America then?

What is clearly pointless to me is that we (Britons) are badge snobs and if it is a compact/executive car made/originating from Germany it has to be an Audi, BMW or Mercedes. That's why the Germans love and rip us off and it's also part of the reason the British mass market manufacturers are extinct.

Good points.
I was sat behind a Touareg the other day & I thought, if only that had a BMW or Audi badge on it!!!
The Touareg is obviously a great car; if Porsche can sell it's ugly as sin cousin, the Cayenne in such great numbers.
I've been looking on VW's website & I have to say that I'm warming to this car.
There is still an underlying feeling that it should be the next Passat, rather than passed off a coupe version of the current one & no, it isn't a coupe IMO, but it's a real alternative to the lower powered versions of the Mercedes CLS & you can be sure it will have build quality on a par with the Mercedes, if not better!
