Looks like Audi are going to clean up with these 2 new additions to the TT range.
The TTS gives the TT the power that it should always have had, but without a heavy V6 engine coupled to an already heavy Quattro system.
Unlike the R8 V12 TDI, I think the TT TDI is a great idea; with low emissions, allied to great performance, it might just hasten the demise of some of the petrol versions in this era of massive tax & fuel price hikes (not that I'd like that, but I can see it happening).
hmm you maybe out of date on current trends, its the otherway around, its cheaper per mile to get petrol versions of cars. on similar cars the trend is also for latest petrol to be in the same tax band as the diesel versions. one example being the 170bhp 1.4 TSI golf, to the 170bhp 2.0 TDI golf. same tax per year. the petrol being the cheaper to own and maintain, and more fun and better performance. they havent made a similar version for the TT as of yet in terms of using the 1.4 tsi, reson probably being is that they need a diesel version for people who just buy a car if it diesel, and secondly for the sensible people who want a sporty TT car they will get a powerfull version anyway so the 1.4 is not needed when you can have a 2.0. i think this is a shame as given the right promotion drivers on a budeget could be weened off the diesel mentality and be educated that petrol alternatives can be cheaper and more fun.
....... There's got to be a hundred reasons why i should listen to diesel owners, but right now, i can't think of any.
Hatchback with 170 bhp? Petrol or derv? Give me derv. Why? Because 170 bhp isn't ever going to feel all that fast, so why not have better economy and more real-world shove and overtaking ability.
Once they have sorted the gearbox, the R8 TDI, with a brutal 493 bhp and an incredible 738 lbs-ft (at just 2,750 rpm), will very possibly be the best all-round sports car ever made. 25 mpg, also.
Has it not been debated already that the 170bhp TSI has at least as much shove as the 170bhp TDI. Also what fun is a supercar that you grumble around in at 2750rpm? Surely a supercar is about noise, involvement and fun. I don't think many people who buy a supercar are bothered about fuel economy.(Here we go again... )

With the addition of my new front mounted intercooler, custom made turbo elbow and downpipe and Pulsar GT-R turbo, I won't be worrying about this silly TTS thing at all! Never mind the ghastly Diesel.
As soon as I hear that lifeless drone and plumes of smog entering my cabin, I shall leisurely squeeze my throttle and effortlessly ease away from the monstrosity, leaving it beached and humiliated.

Why should figures on a dial dictate how much fun you are having? The gearing is much higher on a derv to compensate. So-------------- If you simply doubled the numbers on the rev-counter, that would then solve the problem, i presume!
Instead of revving to 5,000 rpm, it would take the same time, to get to the same speeds, but at 10,000 rpm.

I'll borrow my mate's 335d and we'll have to have a compare, Nox!
The 335d is a very impressive car and in rolling start from 40-100 mph it will keep up with the new M3 and will easily slaughter the old e46 M3. From a standing start however it will be left for dead with either of those. 400 n/m2 of torque gives awesome acceleration.
His has the 340 bhp / 510 lbs-ft DMS conversion and a German aftermarket sports exhaust and replacement air filter giving around 360 bhp and 525 lbs-ft. It's hugely fast and even from a standing start, in sport mode, is very quick.

335d 13.32 - 13.75 Tomcat
I'll give him a good go, yeah! Plus that figure is with the aid of rear wheel drive traction from the BMW. On a roll, on boost, I'd be very happy of giving it a good go.
Also, to say the considerably lighter, 340bhp E46 would be thrashed by a 335d - or even the 320bhp E36 M3 Evo - is madness. People talk about these cars like they are world beaters. For goodness sake they are 280 bhp and 1735kg standard! A new shape Saab 95 Aero would keep with that, and a Volvo S60 R would beat it.
I have seen a 335d go for it full pelt through the first three gears coming off a roundabout and while quick, it was nothing special. I will always remember I kept absolutely dead on even with a BMW 535d on a sprint to 100mph in my AX VTS (down the straight of Santa Pod of course for the lefties here).
535d? Your AX wouldn't have stayed with mine, Nox. I know that, from the difference between the one-person AX and the 2-person M3 CSL, which was night and day different when we did it. One-up, i didn't used to lose out to the local CSL by all that much. Other than from a start.
Also those comparison figures forget that the 335d is immense, in-gear, i.e real-world shove.
no they are lardy tank, far too heavy for the power they output. i'm certain next year vw will bring out a replacement to bring it back up to the performance it should be. possibly using the audi TTS engine, less weight more power.
