The is a crack in my front heated windscreen (focus) - about 6 inches long. It is near the bottom corner, passenger side, and away from the driving view. Something dropped/hit it whilst I was driving at 60/70mph. The crack can be felt on the outside but not the inside. I have been driving for about a week with it. Will this crack spread and would I need to replace the windscreen? Or can I buy a kit to fix it? I have comp insurance cover which I understand covers this and does not affect the no claims bonus?

Not sure if this is any help.

Cracks can spread like heck depending on the loading or just because they feel like it or not at all. How long is a piece of string question really.

Personally I would change it. Try the insurance.

You cant repair a six in crack and it will need replacing as it will spread in the cold weather and once it gets into your line of vision its illegal. A windscreen repalcement costs whatever your glass excess on your policy is and doesnt damage your no claims so get it changed rather than get stuck.

Thanks for the replies. I phoned Tesco insurance today and was directed to autoglass who have arranged to replace the windscreen at my workplace tomorrow. As craigjm says, it doesn't affect the no claims bonus and I just need to pay the £75 excess.

Just one word of caution - watch that they seal it properly as I have had two occasions when they rushed the job and failed to seat it properly. The seal was not 100% all round and had to be re-done.

...and make sure they put in the same spec windshield or better than the one that comes out.
Autoglass came to replace my wife's windshield with one that did not have the automatic lights/wipers facility (it's all in the shading). It took them a week to get the proper one.

Well we're safe for now. Thank goodness we're in a bowling alley.

Autoglass replaced it today. Fitted the correct one - it was a solar screen with the heating elements and connector and the sealing seems to be done properly. First time in 12 years of driving I have had to replace a windscreen. Got to say, front heated windscreens is something I couldn't live without.

I had to replace my Heated rear screen on my Corolla last week. I arrived back to my car after a night out in Liverpool City Centre and was greeted by a few Police officers with a recovery wagon! Apparently a drunken yob decided to kick the rear end of my car in resulting in smashing the screen! There was glass everywhere, and the car was covered in blood! Its all been replaced now and cleaned up, and a yob has been caught! I was only seconds away from the Police towing my car away as it was "unsafe". I took a statement, breathlysed and was sent away back to Wallasey where i live!

Did you have to pay for it?

When I had my 106, one day I just got into my car and I saw a massive crack in the windscreen. Unfortunately I was 3rd party f&f so I had to ring around for quotes. Luckily it was only £85 so no major blow in the wallet compared to what I thought it would be.

Wow that's cheap. I'm in aberdeen with a cracked Mondeo windscreen. Anyone any cheap ideas for a 9 year old car? Ta.

Just find a cheap garage. Don't leave it because it WILL end up costing you more eventually.

Just whack some sellotape on it!
[/Joke]

No just open the yellow pages and ring every windscreen company and pick the cheapest.
I don't see how a garage would help, they don't stock windscreens. Confused

They'll probably have someone they use to fit them, and many times local independant gararges are cheaper for such jobs...

I didn't mean garage, couldn't think of the word... go to Kwik-Fit or something.

Did it start as a chip or go straight to a crack?? Coz if you get a chip seen to straight away it's usually free, whereas if it turns into a crack, it's £££ for you.

The sunvisor was down when I heard the stone hitting the windscreen so got the bad news whe I put it up. Yep driver side crack 5ins long. I've put blutack at each end and it grown a quarter of an inch this week.

Last one I paid for fully was an old cavalier in the late 1990's and it was £199. With fully comp insurance costing little more than TPF&T and at times being cheaper these days I prefer to be covered and I've had 4 replacements and 1 repair in the last 5 or 6 yrs.

We have lost our way, but we're way ahead of schedule.

Theres small cracks within about a £1 coin in size on the windscreen which has been there for about a year now. It hasn't got any worse and you cant feel it from the inside, and its just above the tip of where the wipers reach so I have left it. Not worth replacing the whole windscreen or even fixing. Driven on motorway many times without problems.

You'll be amazed at what'll happen at the first very hard frost one night! Small crack in my Corsa went from about that size to the full width of the windscreen when we had a sudden cold snap.
