Dashboard computer says long term average 27.5 mpg but around town it must be 20 or less. On a long motorway journey spent mainly in the outside lane about 25mpg or less.

i find that to be a dreadful figure...both my fiat, and my old volvo 850t5 beat thse figures...the fiat is a straight 5 turbo with 220hp, and the volvo was a much larger, less aerodynamic car and uses the engine the focus' is based on.....

i had read several times that the focus was greedy, wonder why that is??..my t5 averaged almost 30mpg, almost 40mpg was available on long, steady runs and the figure never dropped below 25mpg even round town....so much for modern cars being more efficent eh??..
tbh im suprised at that figure, i would have thought it be less seeing as my fiesta ST only gives me 29mpg.

powerful, unstressed engines are sometimes more efficient than smaller engines being worked hard...

Now, I am surprised that Lou's Fiesta ST is only averaging 29mpg. Not a lot more than my Focus ST3. Sounds like you are enjoying the Fiesta though!

However, I'm looking forward to the appearance of Ford's new Focus RS next year. With a reputed 300bhp and 4wd what's the economy going to be like. To be honest....who cares, just bring it on.

All the advance publicity I've read, on 4Car and elsewhere, cites 4wd for the new Focus RS.
I have to agree that to do it with only 2wd would be a mistake.

im sure in car magazines 'preview' of the rs, they said it was almost certainly fwd..i may, as ever, have misremembered this tho...

If the new Focus RS turns out to be only 2wd and priced at a reputed 25K then I'd not buy it.

I dont think the on dash computer read outs are realistic. best thing to do is work it out manually. pretty simple, fill the car with gas, reset tacho, when you next fill up look at the no. of litres not the price. then work out from there.

perform side to side MPG comparisons on www.WhatMPG.co.uk

Ive got an Audi A4 1.9Tdi (90 bhp)
and the list says 53 combined but im getting 48 which is good but not what they say..

kiss my bad self

With a new GTR intercooler, and freeflow turbo elbow and downpipe, I'm nearly touching the 30mpg mark driving sensibly now.

An A4 with 90 bhp must be pretty sluggish.

Its the old pre-PD engine, B, it came in two sizes 90 and 110, whilst the 110 was more lively the 90 was quite a good engine, and not as complicated as the PD!

I'd agree with the comment re on board computer displays, though it varies from car to car, my old one wass pretty acurate though the existing one is about 7% over reading.

*** BMW 3 series Touring.
*** 2 litre diesel
*** Automatic transmission
*** 1/3 driving around town, 2/3 driving on Motorway or Dual carriageway

*** Combined MPG is 44-48 depending on how spirited I drive it.

Not bad fuel economy for a 2 litre diesel automatic, I would have thought.

I'd say for my three:
1978 924 2.0litre gets about 35 with a light foot and 30mpg zooming around.

1985 944 2.5litre gets about 30-32 with a light foot and about 25 zooming.

2001 Zafira 1.6 gets about 35-38 light footed and 30-32 zooming.

We have lost our way, but we're way ahead of schedule.
