With reagrds to the other bit, I quote the Highway Code, section 262:
"Use your mirrors and get into the correct lane for your vehicle in good time and as signs direct."
As you will note it doesn't say when, just "in good time" - now is that 1 mile before, 800yds, 400yds, 200yds or 10 yds?? Personally I feel that any later than 100yds from where the cones start is too late! But you will also note that there are no "clearly defined rules "!

Sorry - just re-read the whole thread ( ) - you are right you were all refering to the red crosses, and i was the only one on about cones - we don't see many of the red crosses on the M5/6 you see! (thats my excuse, anyhow!).
I see some shocking driving every day - usually bus drivers and twerps in big cars (german, of course ) that think they own the road - I know taxi drivers get a bad name, but we're not all bad.
