Ok. Here's the thing. I love Top Gear. I love The Stig. However... don't you think that there's a place on the show for someone who can really drive? What about Damon Hill - I remember they had a test between the new 575 Ferrari and the Aston Vanquish, with Damon Hill guesting alongside Clarkson, and it was really good tv.
So. Keep the Stig for the timed laps, get Damon in and get May off to the hairdressers.
If not Damon Hill - any ideas at all...? Or am I just talking nonsense.
Lol dont u get it? the Stig is a professional racing driver. The last stig was Perry McCarthy An old Formula 1 driver and test driver for Arrows, Beneton and Willims and BMW, and you say they need someone who can drive!*!*!
Any by the way, Damon Hill could possibl;y be the stig, when he was on the show as a guest, he was all of a sudden a sand by guest when some other guest failed to show for filming. And when asked if he was the stig, he never denied it.
Also, people who own rare cars often drive the car themself dressed as the stig, such as the Renault F1 car, that was not driven by "the stig"
The problem with that idea is that most F1 drivers are excruciatingly boring. That may be why the Stig is anonymous. You wouldn't want to hear him speak.
OK, James May is also rather dull, but in fairly a humorous deadpan kind of way. I much prefer him to any of the second hand car dealers they had before or even Tiff "42mph backwards" Niddell.
Sorry kalvaza2, but you're either wrong or else that's not the prog I was referring to. I'm talking about a couple of years back when they went to the Isle of Man and Clarkson and Hill were there with the Vanquish and 575.
Clarkson : "so when I flash my lights, you just pull over and let me past" Hill : "You really think that's going to happen?"
I'm not advocating getting rid of the Stig, and I do understand the whole point of his being hidden and anonymous - it's just that it would be good to see someone putting performance cars through their paces and commenting as they go.
ok... whats wrong with JC??? ok hes nto an ex F1 star but hes still got lots of experience driving supercars. he'll be able to give the basics of if the car handles well and feels well weighted etc.
I think my idea was that for all JC's talents, there are certain cars that would benefit from someone with *more* talent taking them for a spin. That's one of the reasons I watch Fifth Gear - for all his faults, Tiff Needell is a good driver, and there's nothing better than watching a car being driven properly.
I'm not too bothered, though. The format of the show is great the way it is.

Oh, right, sorry. I've never seen that one.
I see what you mean by having a driver that commentates on how the car feels when they're driving it but Top Gear wouldn't allow it as it's too much about cars and not themselves.
Anyway, so we really need another Tiff Needel? I find him irritating as it is by talking about the car and ending the sentence with "concentrate, Tiff."
