Title says it all guys. As inspired by the Forgotten Cars thread…..

The overrated, under-achieving cars that for some bizarre reason are either popular sellers or press are infatuated with.

Past & present, name them here.

3 series, 5 series, 6 series, 7 series.....ooh a tad predictable i know, but hey, someone had too.....clio 172/182 clubsport thingys....yes they are the holy grail of hot hatches..but they have the build quality of a 10 yr old citroen ax.....new golf...same ol same ol....kinda cool looking, will soon be as ubiquitous as the old one....seems to be automatically assumed to be the benchmark...good car, just a bit sick of the interminable tweaking of the old concept...it never seems to move the game on, just nudge it constantly in the right direction.....

BMW 1 series. Who would want an ugly, cramped, expensive Astra? Oh yes, I forgot that it's got the 'I'm a mug' badge on the front!

Cars I personnaly would like to forget are the following:

Chrysler Valiant, circa 1974 possibly the least roadholding ability I ever experienced, it wallowed so much, my kids who were NEVER car sick, were in that.

BMW 525 1976, A really prodigious thirst and very dodgy electric spoilt was was a wonderful drive.

Alfa Romeo GTV 1978: the most expensive (in real terms) car I've ever owned. Plus it could not pass a garage without needing major work/investement.

Peugeot 305: a noisy tin box with poor quality and unreliability built in.

Montego 1988: had one on hire which was well screwed together, then bought one and the difference was chalk and cheese.

Diahatsu Charade 1990: reliable but could not bear to sit in my wife's car.

Renault Laguna 1995: company car very glad I had not bought it, twice dumped its cambelt on me.

Chevy Surburban 1997: a very thirsty barge. I believe worldwide petrol shortages were down to this one.

Chevy Aerostar 1998: ditto suburban, with the added bonus of poor reliability.

Discovery 2000: how not to make a vehicle suitable for Africa.

The problem is that in the wee small hours visions of these vehicles still haunt your dreams and disturb your sleep.

The new-shape Ford Focus-what were they thinking-I don't care that it is a good drive etc-I wouldn't want to be seen in one.
And as for Renault 182 being like a 10 year old Ax-you obviously haven't been in my Ax-what flattery!

Peugeot 307!

Can't decide whether it's an MPV or a hatch!

The windscreen is about 400 yards away!

It's now got the hideous fish mouth grille, with a piece of the front bumper missing & coupled to Peugeot's shoddy reliabilty record (I know from personal experience Mad), it makes you wonder why so many people buy them! Confused

Mrs Oilburner described said Focus as a "fat frog" when seen from behind. Most apt I thought.

Anyone who says any of the above cars are best forgotten has never been in an FSO Polonez. Perspective, it's great! Big Grin

I don't think it's offensive, it's just terminally bland. It is a car that's easily forgotten rather than one that should be Smile.

..corvair was a much maligned car, literally hounded out of production due to the publication of a book by ralph nader called, famously, unsafe at any speed.....gm demonstrated to no avail that the rear engined corvair handled better than many of its contemporys and had greater roll resistance than many too..but it was too late, the gullible as ever american public had made their minds up.....almost a sporty compact car by yankee standards, it was one of the first production cars, if not THE first to be fitted with a tirbocharger....coupes and convertibles are lovely lookin motors...i love em....but then i would....id quite like a pacer too...just for the ugly factor...incredibly sh*te car by all accounts....

Renault Dauphine Gordini...great car looking for a less rust-prone body.

FArina CAmbridge....compared to a Mk 1 Cortina? no contest!

pug309.....interior fell apart...so did the engine!

dunno about you lot, but I judge the quality of a make/model by how well it has survived with a trillion owners and 10 years or so down the line?

If it still feels good, has a decent interior, then it must have been a quality motor in the first place?

which is why I dont like Mondeos.
they're ok whilst they work, but there are too many serious problems in the car, waiting to develope with time.

My usual few predictable choices which my solictor has advised me not mention.....hehehehe Wink You know which two I mean Wink

So instead here are some others:

Escort, but at least the press thought it was bad.
Nissan palmira (sorry, Primera...TAXI!) Smile
Metro, Maestro & Montego should have been killed of by the end of the 80s.
Rover 200/400 - this may of had revvy 16v motors, it may not breakdown..much, but this was the car that effectively killed Rover.
