Anybody had any success with the removal of diesel fuel spillage from a tarmac driveway (leaky builders van). I have tried power washing without much success and obviously can’t use petrol based fluids. Anyone know of any effective, but gentle products on the market to remove this unsightly mess?

How much? Not sure about Gunk or Jizer, check the tin for the instructions. Maybe other de greasers. Mr Muscle kitchen cleaner (not joking but if it shifts grease then it might work but maybe it will damage the tarmac?) Tried fine sand? Leave it to soak it up.

Several 10p size spots and one large saucer size spot. Tempted by Gunk (takes me back a bit!) have to try it on a less obvious area first.

Gunk do a driveway cleaner, works a treat. I've also tried a foam based oil remover, but the Gunk is better.

Problem is that the clean bit will be so clean, you'll probably end up jet washing the whole drive so it will all look the same colour.

A Karcher pressure washer is a good investment as you can clean the underneath of your car and clean the drive with it.

Always wary of a pressure washer on tarmac. It can lift the lumps so to speak, a mate made a mess worse doing the same.

Yes got a 150 bar (2000PSI) power washer but as Tomark says I could easily be down to the hardcore! Going to try old faithful Gunk.
Thanks for the info folk.

Pretty sure Gunk or Jizer engine cleaners have a warning about tarmac on. Assume you are after the drive cleaner?

Yes, driveway cleaner but after a call to Gunk they suggest diluting 4 part water - 1 part Gunk. Sounds quite mild to me but better safe than sorry. Eek

I'd have said fine sand as well - they seem to put it down on garage forecourts and then hose it away after its soaked up the mess.

BTW are you sure it was diesel? If it was i hope you reported the van as well as a leaking tank is leathel - I just wondered as all those "diesel spills" you see on supermarket carparks are actually Engine Oil leaks from leaky engines and that oil is a lot thicker than diesel and harder to get rid of!

Yep, definitely diesel, smelt like diesel and tasted like diesel. It was from the front area of the vehicle not the tank so undoubtedly weeping from the pump or injectors / pipes and being distributed all over the engine bay and finding its way to ground zero via various points.
As an ex-motorcyclist of 40+ years experience I am more than aware of diesel slicks and yes I have phoned the company to comment on the mess I have been left with. I expect they have taken the vehicle off the road as we speak and the fuel system is being completely overhauled…….. Roll Eyes
