One of the best performance qualities of a modern diesel (for me) is the surge you get. That effortless boost which is just so suited for that instant overtaking or accelerating manouevre which you can get with little over 2.5k rpm.
So is the surge more down to the turbo or the torque abundance or both? In a petrol car with a turbo is it the same or would the torque advantage in a diesel edge the petrol?
And vice versa, what is your favourite performance quality in a petrol? For me its the feeling of the combination of smoothness and engine note at high revs. I also see this in american cop films when they are totally flooring the car in high speed chases.

--Depends on the car/engine/boost pressure/gearing but assuming relative equivalency the turbo diesel will generally shove harder for a shorter period, with the petrol giving you less of an outright boot but over a wider rev range.

--Hitting the higher cam profile on a VVT/MIVEC type engine. Raucous but utterly addictive. Combine it with a turbo and the grin factor is heard to beat.
