Anyone see that tribute to Raymond Baxter last night on BBC2?
On a previous thread some were saying that "technical" tv shows were boring and I remember making the point that it depends on the presenter.
Well I must have been thinking of RB when I wrote it, for those of you who haven't seen him, he's one of those blokes who could make boring things sound interesting - he started Tomorrow's World TV programme and was something of a dare-devil - with a background as a Spitfire pilot, rally driver, etc, etc, its no wonder!
He will be missed, I was only sorry that the prog only lasted 30 mins, they could have done a lot longer, which I'm sure they would if it had been one of our current crop of "celebraties"!
I saw it and although I didn't really know of any of the work of Raymond Baxter, I felt that I would have really liked him had a been a part of the generation he did most of his broadcasting in.
He just seemed like one of those people who loved engineering and technology, and forward thinking, and I have quite a lot of that in myself. I was shedding a tear by the end of the programme. I had only ever heard of him from reading James May's Telegraph Column and only actually tuned in because my brother told me he was paying tribute.
I definitely agreed with Raymond Baxter about mourning the loss of Concorde, for it was such a loss to engineering. Too bloody right.
You're wearing tights. I can't take lectures on physics from a man in tights. Dancing yes. Physics no!
I second both of those. I know I'm an old fart, but they don't make Raymond Baxters anymore sadly. He belonged to a different age, long before chavs had been invented.
I think the Beeb should repeat some of the old Tomorrow's Worlds as they are both interesting, and frankly, quite funny.
