What's been done?
The VXR might be a tad too quick, alas.

It's got a DTUK plug and play box fitted, so I can return the car to standard spec when I eventually let her go. On the Astra forum they are very highly rated - it's set up for four different power profiles and has the capability to flex those profiles by up to +/- 30%, so it's ideal for my needs. MPG is unaffected either!

On fifth gear the VXR was faster on a standing start, but the diesel quicker on a rolling start, and if I recall on the lap of the track they were about evens. I may be wrong but I know it was close!

Obviously a VXR driver can go out and do something similar to his car, but to the unaware HH driver it would not be nice to be overtaken by a something chucking out smoke!

Don't forget, the 1.9CDTI has the same peak torque as the 2.0T in the VXR as standard, albeit lower down in the rev range (hence the lower power output). The only way to get to that peak power in the VXR is to having it screaming in every gear - I've got it from 2,000rpm or lower.

I am a derv fan, but the Astra VXR easily revs to high rpm to get it's power and has plenty from 3,500 rpm.

Also true - I need to point out that what I had said about it being close on fifth gear is factually incorrect. Having watched it back on YouTube I notice that VBH is driving the VXR and a touring car driver is in the diesel - which obviously gives an unfair advantage from a skill point of view. Also it is unclear what the rules of the rolling start were - it is mentioned that the diesel is starting in 4th at 50mph - if they're both in 4th then maybe the diesel would win, but if they're both in their peak power range then I doubt it would be the case. Either way, the Asteroid outside my window puts a smile on my face :-)

Yep, you will surprise a few!

My 334 bhp/506 lbs-ft diesel did, especially when it had 520D badges!

It's just a shame my commute has to be (temporarily) spoiled with roadworks on the M1 and A38! Should be better when it's cleared up though, and until then there are always Sunday mornings for a nice run Smile

North Notts (okay it's Mansfield) to anywhere in the country in general, hence the 20-25k miles per year and the need for a diesel! For the next few weeks I'm heading out towards Stoke on Trent so it's a 120 mile round trip each day; A38, A50.

I go to Ravenshead, from near Chesterfield, quite a bit, so i know the A38 works you mean, not far from the shopping outlet.

Ravensheads only two minutes from me - I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for a flash of light when a cozzy powered westfield flies by! A few weeks ago I was working just at just the other side of Chesterfield, out towards Chatsworth House. Some better roads out that way, but that was before the installation!

I quite like the Toyota Auris SR180 (2.2 turbo-diesel).

i have an sr180

like jap cars a lot so have 2 toyotas. That and a new rav4 xtr, 2.2.

sr180 is quick. Similar to 120d but prob not as nimble with chasis.

When chipped to 210bhp and 500nm, very quick indeed; probably equiv. to 123d.

Not a hot hatch which is why i bought it. Had a t-sport then the supercharged version before. Began a be samey and dull after a while. Still enjoy the sr180. Smile

I enjoy my 4bhp Diesel, it's great. It's got, like, 8lb/ft of torque and every thing! My Petrol has 200bhp and twice the revs, but is got only 6lb/ft of torque, which means it isn't cool any more. It's get samey and boring having all that power above 3000rpm.

I love having my 4bhp at 1000rpm, makes for a thrilling ride!

The 123d with 201/295 is very good though.
Maps to 240/340.

I'm quite surprised that Audi have not done an S3 diesel. Confused

Maybe it's round the corner. Confused

A 200 bhp derv would suit it well.

Awful. How is that any good at sowing the annual harvest?

Remember the more power they squeeze out of these diesels the less life they have.
