hi, new to the car forum but looking for some practical advise thought you guys might help?
Looking 4 a new car, 1 or 2 years old, diesel and spacious. I have a 19month old and one on the way, so decent head room and leg room in the back to fit in car seats and good boot space.
Any recommendations? Budget up to £20K

Or an Accord diesel and pocket a lot more of your cash than if you bought the BMW. Smile

If you are after an estate, then a Vauxhall Vectra or Honda Accord or better still, wait for the forthcoming Mondeo estate.

If you want a saloon, then a Skoda Superb would fit the bill.

I humbly suggest that you seriously consider test driving these:
Honda Accord
Skoda Octavia
Volvo V50 D5
Mazda 6 Estate
Vauxhall Vectra Estate

Don't go near anything French or German (even "everybody's favourite" the VW Golf)

You don't mention image/prestige as a factor, so some decent family cars might be good?

Nissan Qashqai is spacious and good looking too.
Honda CRV is a great SUV with plenty of space and a brilliant diesel.
Or how about a mini MPV, such as the extremely underrated Mazda 5?

WOW, this is great, thanks guys. I do want it to look good, and feel nice to drive, but being a mum I have to be practical...

I'd thought about the octavia - seems to be popular with taxi drivers!! I'm keen on good consumption, quite conscious of that, I do alot of town miles aswell as longish journeys.

OK, still don't get it, but guess it's probably a bloke thing.

Looking for estate/hatchback or mpv type back, so at a guess would think rules out SUV or does that make it an SUV?

Do you like things like the Honda CRV and Nissan X Trail?
They tick most of your boxes.
They are SUV.

An SUV is a 4x4-type vehicle.

The most outstanding diesel in your price range would be a Honda CRV, or Accord. Good consumption, effortless power, loads of room.

SUV is such a ludicrous term that us Brits seemed have adopted from the Americans.

Off-roaders are amongst the most NON sporting vehicles on the road.

Something that's as big, cumbersome & lardy as an off-roader definitely is NOT sporty..
