It still amazes me how people spend their money on cars, and it's not limited to rubbish exotica either (eg. Lexus SC430)
Today I saw an 08-reg Mini Traveller - a bad start as it's grossly overpriced and not expected to hold its value like the stock Mini. Secondly, it was brown, proper British Leyland Austin Maxi non-metallic brown, with a brown roof. Third, it was the diesel.
I'm struggling to think of a more hopeless way of spending £16K on a car.
Can anyone beat that? That makes a C6 look like a sober, sensible purchase.
TBH S-M the diesel element is the only thing that'll make it hold any value at all - the D versions are a good selling point as they are band B - as for BL Brown...... surely they haven't, have they???

It's callled Hot Chocolate and you won't be getting much change form £18k, never mind £16k....
I just about remember those awful BL colours, the orange, blue, brown, yellow and that really bland beige! Thank god you can't get colours like that anymore. Although the other day I did see a Merc W124 in base greay, so B weren't the only culpprits!

IMO Complete horlicks. The MINI clubman D is projected as the lowest % depreciating car on the market. Add in some trendy version and you are looking at less than 7% pa exc mileage. Its 109g CO2. Anything over 130g CO2 is commercial new car buyer suicide, anything under is the opposite. If u dont like it fair enough, but dont say its financially a bad proposition, cos it aint.
Really, Benster? Firstly, there's no waiting lists for it, Second, it's widely condemned for poor design, particularly the safety issue of RHD and right-side only rear exit door. It may be low emmissions but it's expensive to insure. Oh, and with rear privacy grass it look's like a pocket-sized hearse.
Similar residual predictions were made around the BMW 1-Series at launch, which is miserably failed to live up to.
Who here would spend £18K on one and honestly expect to see stronger than average residuals when they sold it on?
I don't like the door on the wrong side, I think that was just bloody lazy and a very cheap option for BMW, shows that they might not care for their customers as much as some might think, and I think that is what will make it lose most of it's value, plus the rear looks like some disguised prototype covered in tape (I read that somewhere and thought it was quite fitting).
I'd much rather have a Clio or a Punto - probably smaller, but much more enjoyable to own. Or just a normal Mini.
The Clubman is a bad misjudgement by BMW, imo. It's very much a woman's car, unlike the standard Mini, and women like their 4x4s a lot these days. £18K buys a lot of nearly-new spacious, practical 4x4, with no resemblance to a breadvan.
Also, if the economy continues it's slowdown and maybe recession, overpriced impractical fashion cars like the Clubman will suffer. Good - it's a turkey.
Every post I ever read by Benster has a raft of numbers, statistics and his favourite... percentages!
There's more to life than numbers. The single fact is, a BROWN Mini Clubman with a hopeless Diesel engine is about the worst way you could possibly waste even £1,000, let alone £18,000!
Why did you have to spoil your post by calling the diesel engine in the Clubman hopeless, Nox? Its the best part of the car - the rest of it is just a styling exercise, at least the engine, with low emissions and excellent fuel economy has a reason for its existence, unlike the rest of the car....
Sometimes you just get too carried away with your hatred of diesel and make rather silly comments....
I have to agree. As many things as Nox and i share a liking for, from Evos and Skylines and V10 BMWs, to curry, he doesn't give modern dervs the respect they deserve.

I agree 100%
I think BMW are a disgrace; especially when you consider that us gullible Brits would buy a wheelbarrow if it had a BMW badge on it; yet they cannot be bothered to put the 'club' door on the correct side for markets that drive on the Left!
There's me thinking that MINI was a British company!

The standard MINI is a woman's car; but some for reason a lot of men drive them!
That is the best hot hatch sold to date. 218 bhp, 1090 kgs, fantastic handling and brakes, great soundtrack, superb looks, easy 250 bhp upgrade, as mine had.
PB, my hobby of cars and bikes has cost me around £200,000 in depreciation, at today's prices, all in. (Since 1973). But i have spent the same amount on holidays, in all likelihood. You can't take it with you and my bank balance is probably worse than yours right now!
Absolutely, I'm not knocking it Ian I was just pulling your leg! If you have money you may as well enjoy it, after all you could be run over by a double decker bus tomorrow and it'll be no good to you then. However I sincerely doubt your bank balance is worse than mine

Exactly... you would have thought a company as big as BMW would at least slash out a bit to put the door on the right side. Maybe it'll take a few accidents, like with the TT, to make them get their act together.
