I really want to get over to the continent, where i know some roads really well, with no traffic hardly, no scameras and some seriously long straights.

The M5 costs 50% more, so a bit of an unfair comparison. In most road situations, the 535d isn't much slower, because the M5 goes best when you really go for it, it's relatively gutless below 5,000 rpm. It depends what you want out of a car, really.
How about ride and handling, presumably the M5 is a bit firmer and the 535d more comfortable? As you say I would imagine the 535d isn't that much slower in certain situations as it has more torque but in terms of blasting around B roads or indeed track days the M5 should be a better tool?

The track would see the M5 clear off! No issue there. Ride is the same, pretty much, because my 535d had the M Sport package and 'sportier' tyres, would you believe, as standard, than this M5!
It never did the official comparisons, but in ad lib contests, it was slower initially but was always reeling the competition in as speeds rose. The car was blistering above 50 mph.
