According to "What Car?": QUOTE "Diesel prices could rise by up to 50% if proposals by the merchant shipping industry to switch to the fuel are approved. That could push prices at the pump up to £2.30 per litre, or £10.45 a gallon.
The shipping industry is under pressure to switch from marine fuel, which results in high sulphur dioxide emissions, to a less-polluting power source."
"Estimates suggest that the entire shipping industry would consume one-and-a-half times the amount of diesel currently used by European motorists, equivalent to double the annual oil production of Saudi Arabia.
As a result of the increased demand, estimates suggest that all oil prices would increase by 50%." END-QUOTE
This would completely upset the financial balance between diesel and petrol as it exists at the moment.

Bamf, fuel prices are allowed to go wherever they want, as the current pump prices show. The £2.30 figure is an economic forecast though, and should be viewed only as a possibility.
this is the kind of miraculous news i have been yearning for. i wish and pray that the marine industry switches to pump quality diesel. less for the cars whohoo. finally. btw that is not sarcasm. thumbs up for petrol.
....... There's got to be a hundred reasons why i should listen to diesel owners, but right now, i can't think of any.
ermmm .. hold on a sec, most of the price is tax -- so a doubling of price will be of the price before tax .. not with it sometimes I notice these little details make a difference
why is it when I stand on my head that sometimes, just sometimes ......?
it could be april fool, as the figures are dramatically wrong. say diesel is £1.15 now a litre. £2.30 is double that, which is a 100% increase not 50%.
....... There's got to be a hundred reasons why i should listen to diesel owners, but right now, i can't think of any.
I did read something a few months back about shipping being responsible for more pollution than is previously thought. Apparently the fuel they use just now is basically a thick tar-like substance which is dirt cheap and little refined, so there were rumblings that they might have to clean it up a bit.
Doubt they'd just jump straight onto regular ULSD of the type I stick in my tank, though, they'll maybe just refine what they have a bit more to reduce sulphur content and soot.
I can't see how anyone would want to celebrate the doubling of the price of diesel, even if you're the most ardent petrol fan - what do you think powers the ships and lorries that deliver most of our food and consumer goods? And who would end up paying for these increased freighting costs??

Super idea, I look forward to the resulting soaring costs in construction, agriculture, retail, utilities... in fact pretty much everything we use or buy has some relation to it.
Like I said, diesel is the workhorse of the world. You might never dream of owning a car that runs on the stuff, but your wallet will soon know about it if it disappears!

money is not the issue for me. i would steal food if it became too expensive. but i would still be happy diesel was illegal. different priorities i guess.

Thats a very selfish viewpoint. And yourself (and others that do it) stealing the food would FURTHER increase prices for everyone else.
